I just had to extend my closing from the end of October until the end of November as the water is way too warm. Still over 70! Anyone else extending?

I am temped but I spent close to an hour today skimming leaves off the top and bottom of the pool. And the leaf dropping is just starting.

I will close this Friday as planned. The heater is off and I hope the cold night temperatures of the next few days will cool the water.

I'm just down the road from you and still swimming most days! (I have left my heat pump on.) It looks like it's turning into Fall for real tonight so I may be done for the season :-( Will probably still close end of October or so, but since I don't use a cover, it's very easy to throw the robot in and add some chlorine if need be. There will be a couple of weeks of heavy leaf skimming coming up, though!

If you're using a winter mesh cover like a loop lock brand or the like I'd recommend cover the pool while all is still working below the cover. Maintain it until the water temp drops then winterize. I think in the next 2 weeks it'll have the chance to get down low enough.

Down the road from you as well in Walkersville. Came home from a few days at the beach and not a leaf or helicopter in my yard. They somehow all managed to end up in the pool and after an hour of scooping pump is running over night and cover is going on Sunday.. hate to stop looking at the nice blue water, but my neighbors trees are driving me nuts

That thought did cross my mind but then we started to get actual Fall here in Central PA and the water temp was 62 yesterday. We're scheduled to close Monday 10/25 so I think we'll be ok.

It looks pretty consistent in the extended forecasts but we all know more than 5 days ahead is a crud shoot for the weather guy. 🤷‍♂️

And how many times did the temps decide to have Summer2.0 in Nov ? Whattayagonnado?

Don't believe the myth of closing with the water temp below 60 degrees. I closed a month ago and water temp was 80 degrees. I have been closing my pool myself for 20 years I have never opened to a green pool. If water temp was a factor I would have a green pool when I opened, like I said 20 years doing this the water temp has never been anywhere near 60 degrees, I would have to close in November to have water that cold. I close after Labor day as we don't use the pool after that and I don't want to be fishing all the leaves out of the pool waiting for the water temp to drop to 60 degrees is totally unnecessary.I always close after labor day and open up a week before Memorial day and water is always crystal clear when I open it looks just like when I closed it up. I don't open the cover after it is closed and add anything, I don't touch it till I open it May. I don't use any algicide, just bring chlorine level up to near slam level this is the most important thing and why people open up to a green pool. I don't know where that myth of closing when water is below 60 degrees started but it is totally untrue. I am in the northeast lived in NYC and now in central NJ, have had winters with 2-3 feet of snow and winters with hardly any snow. Had above ground and inground pools doesn't matter just raise chlorine level and forget about water temperature. I have got so much great info and advice from this site not sure why they don't address this myth about water temperature at closing.

It does matter. If you close with enough FC to make it through, you’re good. Holding off as late as possible is the best insurance. Have you done everything perfect or were you just lucky ? We will never know. But it worked for you so that’s awesome.

We can’t know what everyone’s specific needs will be so by advising to wait, we lessen their needs and are ‘right’ more often.

Because it is not a myth, it is science.

The science is that algae growth drops as water temperature drops. Below 60F you get little algae replication.

Now if you have an algae free pool, that many of us who follow the TFPC methods have, then you can close at any water temperature since there is no algae to replicate.

However, if you have some algae in the pool then closing when water temperature is down around 60F and opening before the water gets too warm lets you get chlorine into the pool before the algae gets a chance to grow.

Which is what I am saying if you have no CC and you raise your chlorine level to near slam levels the water temperature doesn't matter. 20 years of doing this is not luck, science will tell you that algae needs light to grow and survive just google it. If you have no CC and you raise FC level and have a good cover there is no light. The coldest my water has ever been when I closed is low 70's no where near 60 degrees. If you are not taking care of the pool and have algae you will have a problem. I am assuming that people on this site are following the TFP methods. The water temperature is irrelevant just close at CC of 0 and high FC level. All of these posts come spring time about green pools could be avoided if you just follow this I been doing this 20 years in a row. Northeast weather is similar In NYC area,NJ,CT, PA. Closed at 80 degrees this year, I'll post pics of opening in spring. Seeing is believing.

Slam level for you is also 28 with a salt system and would be only 12 for a LC dosed pool. That buys you a lot of time once covered. It may not play out the same elsewhere, even right down the block from you. You particular cover and the surrounding environment (shade/ etc) can play roles as well.

Again, it works for you and that’s awesome. You have found your ‘sweet spot’. But they are not one size fits all, hence the need for our caution and using every advantage possible to dole out advice from afar.

We like to look at the pool as a water feature in our backyard so I don't mind waiting until the water is colder to close. I do think it helps, a lot, but I understand that warmer water could also be ok given favorable circumstances. For now I clean out leaves every once in awhile.

I just shut down my heat pump last Saturday and installed my solid Loop-Loc on Sunday. My pump is still running on a slow speed. I won't shut down until the water is close to 60F. Right now it is 72F.

I plan on closing as soon as my Loop Loc AquaExtreme comes in but have my autocover on anyway since the water is 60 degrees and I am in NJ as well. Will use SWG to raise chlorine up to slam which is 28 for me and then shut it down. Just waiting for the cover to arrive an be installed and they will close my pool all at the same time. Crossing my fingers no alage as currently my CC is 0. Keeping my autocover closed but even with that I see some spiders get in there Amazing they find a way in there.
