We have our draft construction plan in hand. Would like as much feedback as possible especially on equipment. I can have them update with anything I want, for example we had planned to use the intellichlor SWG. What do I need if we switch brands?

Or am I being silly and their suggested equipment is just fine? Hayward is trusted and plentiful. I don't have brand loyalty to pentair but heard it is good.

Things for sure we are updating:
*Pool walkway to Travertine
*Depth to be 4'-5'-3.5'. Not sure which side to do 4 ft though, by shelf?
*Robot cleaner, not suction
*channel drain (latest concept has them but not in this plan it seems)
*map irrigation for planters

Especially want feedback in equipment and lines.

Thanks in advance! This is an important step!

Overall very nice layout of the yard and other gathering areas.
It would be best to have the 3.5ft by the steps as that makes the transition easier but I would quickly have that slope to the 4ft so you can have 4ft on both sides.

You can probably get by with 1 skimmer based on size of pool. Some like 2 skimmers because it provides a back up skimmer as well as compensates for varying wind shifts. If you go with 2 skimmers - have each independently plumbed back to the equipment pad.

Hayward is a good brand. It is best that you keep the pump, SWCG and automation all from same mfg. to ensure compatibility.

That basketball goal does appear a little close to the steps. That could cause a twisted ankle or similar if the group is rowdy. Why not put the steps near the baja deck near the pathway from the porch? You could then remove those small steps on opposite side of baja deck.

I do not see a clear walkway to the spa. If that is real grass then how to avoid getting dirt and debris carried on your feet into the spa?

Good Luck

Thanks for the input! That will be artificial grass, I should probably have that marked out specifically as well.

I also don't understand lighting. Is that handled by automation only if they are hayward lights? Those I can't find online less than $1000 each. Yet I find these ones for less than $200 each. I can't imagine paying near $5k for hayward lights solely for automation. Am I missing something? This has me unduly stressed.

Just a few things to consider,

minimum 2 return lines on the reef step

7’ reef step at the center will accommodate 1 hotel type lounge in the center with room to walk in front of, all others will be tight fit

more than one umbrella sleves so you can track the sun and stay in the shade

steps in the pool look oversized and consume floor space, smaller steps are more common on the diagonal

Spa size at 7’X 7’ is small at today’s standards, elevation at +12” I would go +18” and now you have a nice height for sitting around the spa on the coping, have the seats in the spa cut to +21” and +24” for different jet elevations

hope these pictures help with explanation of my comment, Ray

Thank you!

Bump for any more input. Especially on lights that are compatible with Hayward automation.

Return lines are how filtered/heated/sanitized water is sent back to the swimming pool. A reef step your size would need 2 in order to keep water circulation moving (water that has been treated with chemicals to prevent the growth of algae) its always better to over size than undersize because you cannot change the outcome once Shotcrete is applied. Hope this helps to explain, Ray

Got it, the size of the reef prompted that. Thanks for explaining 💪

The Hayward 320 ColorLogic lights with 100' cord are $419. PoolSupply4Less Search Results
Maybe it's just that I am clueless on lighting, but are these only for accent or spa, or are they OK for the full pool as shown on the plan for us? They have a lower watt light in spa, and three higher watt lights in the pool. Would these cover all the bases?

The description:
" ColorLogic 1.5-inch light is ideal for highlighting steps, bubblers, baja shelves and other water features."

Is this only for the spa?

Lighting, for whatever reason, confuses the heck out of me. I get all the other stuff pretty well but my brain shuts down on lights and all the product options seem counter intuitive, especially if I want tied into automation.

The 320 is not just for spas. It just take more to luminate the same area as the larger Universal ColorLogic pool light.
Installing 5 of the 320 Colorlogic in a 40'x15' light blue pool.
Lights are all on one side and face away for the house and main pool side seating area.
Should have them on in a few days. Will post a picture then.

Definitely want to see that pic!

I assume 3 in our pool area, one in the spa will suffice or do you think a smaller light will be needed behind the baja step?

i was looking at your attachment again. It only calls out 24v and 12v lights and at the top it states it may require a mini-light on the baja deck. With that large semi-circle baja deck, you may need 2 on the arc. Also, the pool lights should be on the pool wall nearest the house so they face away from you.

Is this a generic plan that someone developed for you? Hayward has 3-4 different LED lights. You want to know the lumens each light will put out. You may want the PB to specify which lights they are proposing so then you can make better decisions on the number and placement.

Updated and now off to engineering! The change on the steps was such a good call. It set us back a week but measure twice, cut once right?
