Not exactly pool-related but thought expertise on the forum may bring an answer...

I just bought a sump pump (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07SNGQQVW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to drain groundwater from my pool sump pit.

After using it today, I noticed there's a fair bit of water that's still trapped inside the pump. The pump doesn't have a drain to unscrew and drain the water. I turned it upside down a few times but only a few drops came out.

I've never used a sump pump before... is this normal? I assumed it would need to be empty and dry to store it...

What makes you think water is trapped inside? There is no place for water to be trapped if you turn the pump 180 degrees a few times.

Allen - I can feel it, by weight, and I can hear it swishing around as I shake the pump. This might just be a pump with poor design that just ends up trapping in water... I see a few questions on amazon on this pump pointing to the same concern..

Strange pump. All the submersible pumps I have had just drain straight through.

I had the 3/4 (?) HP cheapo one from Lowe’s. It didn’t matter how much I jiggled and danced it, there was always a cup or so swishing around. I’d get what I could and the leftovers froze many times in the garage without harm.

sounds like the same kind of cheapo pump i have.. i guess it's just a design flow. glad to know it doesnt cause functional issues... otherwise i was going to return! thx for sharing your experience

It seemed to have a cup inside on the bottom and an inverted equivalent at the hose connection, or that just pushed a few inches into the center of the pump. But the water seemed to slosh around the outside edge of the pump. Believe me I tried to shake it just right. Then a dozen more times for good measure each time. :ROFLMAO:

I'm all for that in theory, but there was a distinct difference between just used pump and sat for a few months pump. Does the oil solidify somehow or did the water just evaporate ?

Unless you weighed the pump, the difference is very subjective.

I don't think that water will get trapped in the pump if you turn it upside down and back.

Maybe if it had a check valve at the output, it might trap water.

Not the weight, which now that you mention it, did feel lighter........ but the swishing. After the pump sat for a month or so, there was no more swishing. No amount of inverting/shaking would empty it after using it, but some time later it was dry or solid.

Dang !!!! Just realized I threw mine out a month ago for cord connection issues at the pump. It had a weird plug on the pump side and I didn't want to splice it. If i had I kept it I could dunked it and cut it open to see.

That's what I get for throwing some away. Never. Again !!! :ROFLMAO:

Nope. There’d be proof of that. One of the great mysteries like the pyramids I guess, except, you know, With a cheapo pump. 🤷‍♂️
