Second year try

Hi guys, so it's coming close to the second summer with my pool. Honestly, I haven't been testing my pool water during the winter, and since it's almost pool party time, I want to get my pool right before people start coming over. I've just been putting 1/4-1/2 gallon of chlorine every 1-3 days depending on my schedule. I was having a little algae problems, which caused more dirt and algae to sit on my pool. I recently changed my cartridge filters of my filter and that helped a lot with the algae. I noticed there was still some algae leftover in the leaf canister and the tubing for the vacuum. I think my main problem was there wasn't any CYA to help with the chlorine. I have a couple questions regarding my pool specifically. But first my test results.

My test results (sunset):
FC - 0? I put a whole gallon yesterday incase I couldn't add some today, but added 1/2 gallon today. Will retest in a little bit.
pH - 7.4
TA - 230
CH - 230
CYA - 0 (Just added 30ppm of CYA using the sock method, which is currently being run at the moment.)

1. I noticed my pool walls get really dusty after 2 days of not brushing, is that considered normal? There is also signs of yellow algae or dirt, if I don't brush for even 1 day. Should I be needing to brush everyday to help with the dust?

2. How long does let's say 8 gallons of 12.5% Chlorine last you guys? This usually lasts me 2-3 weeks. Am I compensating for the lack of CYA by adding chlorine? Or is this normal?

3. The pool store guy is always sounds surprised when I come in every 2-3 weeks to pick up 2 HASA containers (8 gallons of chlorine), how often do yo guys need to refill chlorine at the pool store?

4. Recommended steps to start maintaining my pool for the summer. I know I'll probably have to SLAM my pool. Looking to get it cleared up by Memorial Day Weekend for the family.

Thanks!

You need to follow the SLAM Process. Filters do not eliminate algae.
With your pool free of algae, depending on where you live in the LA basin and keeping your CYA in the 40-50 ppm range, you should be using 3ppm FC per day, plus/minus.

Thanks, so I started the SLAM. The water is cleaner and clearer. I also cleaned out the algae on the vacuum hose and leaf canister. However, the chlorine difference from morning to 5pm, is about 10ppm on the test for the two days I’ve been following SLAM. I also checked my CYA and it’s about 35 atm. I completed the OCLT the first night and it was about 2ppm. What could be causing the drastic drop in chlorine?

So I did an OCLT and it was 0. I also brought my FC to 20ppm before I left for work at 8am. When I came back at 5pm, it dropped down to 5ppm.
Great., Do another OCLT tonight. If your pool water is crystal clear, no debris on the floor, and you pass OCLT with less than 1 CC, you are done.

CYA is still low. I misread your note, I thought you said it dropped 5 ppm, not to 5 ppm.

Stick with the SLAM for a couple days. Check your CYA in a day or two.

Thanks, so my CYA reached 45. My FC is dropping between 3-4 ppm a day which is good enough for me. My pool now fits the SLAM requirements. My TA is high, would i just slowly add muriatic acid while maintaining pH above 7.2? Could the high TA also be why I'm having staining on my pool walls and floors?

I think the water is free of algae, it met all the requirements. I would just like to get rid of this staining if possible. I wanted to do the Zero Alkalinity Acid Treatment. Would that also lower my TA ? So i could kill two birds with one stone. Would the Zero Alkalinity Acid Treatment be effective for this staining? Or would ProTeam Metal Magic work better?
