Valves Open?

Sorry, for the constant questions (I get confused easily), but was just curious by what everyone means by "turning the valves open."

As before, earlier in the fall, I drained both the pump and filter, and assumed that was all I needed to do. However, I have seen some asking if I have opened up the valves as well. In this case, is this referring to the multiport at the filter, or the two red turn valves leading into and out of the pad equipment? At the moment, I have left all valves in the same positions as they would be if the pool were running. Is this correct? Or do I need to turn them to other settings?

Sorry for the questions, but between this, and worrying if the styrofoam covers will protect the outdoor faucets at the forecasted temps, I've just about pulled what little hair I have left.

P.S. Would a picture of my setup help?

A picture would help however, the purpose of "opening valves" is to prevent any pressure lock. So if you have a water feature that has a valve on it and you drained water from your pump then ensure the valve on the water feature is open. This allows the fluid remaining in the line to equalize and expand if it does start to freeze. You want the expansion to take the path of least resistance - up or down the pipe.
With regard to your valves on the pad that control spa mode or pool mode, however you have them set is "open" so they should be fine.
Have you also covered your equipment pad with a tarp?

I used an old spray painting tent & some blankets. Anything to cover as long as it isn’t touching the pump motor should do the trick.
