Bought 120 volt Pentair LED light by mistake, should’ve been a 12 volt

Long story made short;

pool light in an in-ground pool wasn’t working in a home I recently bought.

pool service guy said it’s a 120 volt so get a 120 volt. So I did. Went to install it (the easy part was pulling the wires) and the screw hole in the niche is at 4 o’clock instead of 12, but the new Pentair 5g Intellibright has multiple screw holes. Yay.

light won’t go on. Checked power at the J box and no power (there was power before).

further examination; I DO have a transformer, so I guess I should have got the 12 volt version.

called Pentair to se if I can hook it up to a light switch or outlet to see if it goes on. He says sure, but it must be installed in the niche in the water. AND he said that the light has a transformer built in to knock it down to 12 volts.

my pool guy that said I needed to buy a 120 volt light also says my transformer is shot because it’s only putting out 6-7 volts. At the J box for the light, there was no power At either J box.

now for my question.

did I possibly ruin my $500 light by connecting it to a possible line voltage of between 6-12 volts? Do I need a new transformer? If the light has a built in transformer, do I just take the transformer out and run 120 to the j box since the light knocks it down to 12?

PS the spa light does not work either....

d,

Sounds to me like you have a bag full of "Dachucksetr"

The main problem I see is that you now have a mixed bag of stuff... Since you have a transformer, this means that both your Spa and Pool originally had low voltage (12 VAC) lights...

Both lights need to be either120 or 12 volts, or you will need to rewire so that the pool light gets 120 volts and your spa light gets 12 volts.

It could be that your existing transformer is bad, but I would not trust anything your pool guy has to say.

You can't hurt a 120 volt light system by connecting it to a low voltage like 12 volts or less...

Here is what I would do.. Disconnect the new light at the junction box. Leave the existing spa light wiring as is. Turn the spa light on and measure the voltage going to the spa light at the junction box. If the voltage is really only 7 or 8 volts, then disconnect the spa light and see what the voltage reads.. Basically you would then just be looking at the output of the existing transformer. If the output of the transformer is then 12 volts or so, then most likely the spa light is bad and loading it down. If the voltage is still 7 or 8 volts, then the transformer is most likely bad.

Report back your findings and we can discuss what makes sense to do next.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim,

and the wires out at the J boxes seem to be 14 Guage so I think they’d handle the 120 volts. I’d rather not buy a new transformer and light, and skip the transformer and just feed 120 to everything. But is it safe?

D,

You can take out the existing transformer and wire 120 to just the pool light, but you CANNOT wire the existing spa light into 120.. And you can't run 120 volts and 12 volts in the same conduit. So, if you want to run 120 to both lights, you will need a new 120 spa light.

You are stuck between a rock and a hard place..

You also should not have 120V and 12V in the same light junction box if you try and use both lights on different voltage and wiring.

And the 120V light needs to be connected to a GFCI CB.

You need to pick if you want to stay 12V for your lights and get a 12V pool light and return or sell on ebay the 120V light you have. Or change your spa light to 120V.

I can’t return the light, I’ve cut the cable. There’s maybe 15 -17 feet available. I wish these things weren’t so Dang expensive.

ive heard of a Florida place that makes lights, a little less than Pentair. I gotta google them again....

found it, Florida sun seeker!

Sell the light on ebay for 50% - 75% of your cost.
