Hi. My name is Jose. I hired a Pool builder and we are post shotcrete phase. I looked after they were done and I noticed two rebars showing in the corner of steps, also I noticed rebar on the spillway of the hot tub. I spoke to him and he told me that was no problem. That he was going to cut the rebar in the stairs and cover with hydraulic cement and for the rebar showing in the hot tub, he will cover with concrete. Should I be concerned? Thks!

The top of the hot tub will get coping and the rebar will be covered by mortar so not much of an issue.

The rebar at the steps should be cut back at least an inch deep and then the hole covered with hydraulic cement. You don’t want the rebar end at the surface where it can rust and bleed through the plaster.

It should have been caught before the shoot but it happens. It's the project manager's responsibility for qa between contractors.

thank you for your respond. Do this happens a lot? Or was just they didn’t pay attention on what they were doing? How the hydraulic cement hold under the pebble tec compare to the shotcrete?

It happens when there is not real good quality control and inspection between the subcontractors. Rebar contractor put some pieces outside the pans. PB should have caught and corrected it then. Shotcrete crew just lays down the shotcrete. They don;t know the purpose of the rebar. Sometimes rebar stubs are left out to tie into other things.

Shotcrete is stronger structurlayy then hydraulic cement. A small repair hole with hydraulic cement does not compromise the shotcrete structure.

Thank you 🙏🏼. What I was concerned was about how long the hydraulic cement was going to last in that repair and if patch was going to be a problem later on with the pebble sheen. ?

The hydraulic cement will last as long as the gunite. They are both forms of cement.
