Will this approach winterize our pool ?

In ground pool in Southern Oregon: I have in the past... kept the water level high and done nothing but use a freeze control on our circulation pump timer....to keep the water from freezing. I thought, this year, to lower the water level below the skimmer....close off the diverter valve in the skimmer and let the freeze control/timer circulate. A few years ago, using the old method, water froze in the skimmer throat and caused some cracks and subsequent leaks.
Will my new approach work ?
Thank you.......

Hi Allen, yes, pump runs OK and lots of water out of the 2 return jets. Upon further reflection....this may not be the EZ solution I had hoped for. Lots of fir trees close to the pool. Skimmer helps a lot. So for now.....I keep things as they are until weather forecast is for high 20's and then I can drain down below the skimmer and adjust diverter valve.

And after weather warms up....add pool water and go back to normal schedule with the freeze control on.

I dunno.....am I crazy ?

As long as you have some contigency plans if your pump fails during a cold snap. Every year we have a few folks scrambling to prevent freezing due to a pump failure.

Hi again......power failure is more likely in our area than a pump failure. Probably a good idea to buy and store away another pump/motor....just in case. Ours is 230V. So, my next brilliant idea is to build a large, well insulated, cardboard box, big enough to encapsulate the filter tank and pump .....and if power is out and temps will be 32 or less for awhile......cover the equipment with the box...... bring our motorhome close by and use the inverter and/or generator.... to run a 100+ watt drop light under the box. (If the power is out for awhile....WE will be in the motorhome using LP furnace, stove and water heater. Our RV generator is gasoline powered).

We disconnected our LP pool heater a long time ago. What have I missed ? Thanks again.....
