I know... Pucks are probably the best compromise here.

yup, neighbors are coming at least once a week to check the water level and add if needed. auto-fill is on our list for this winter, waiting until we get our rocks repainted before adding the kona labs level smart.

i think i've got a pretty good plan of attack now. thank you everyone for all of your input!

ok, just got home last night ...four full pucks dissolved over almost exactly one month that we were away. tested FC this morning...

FC 19.5
CC 0

I assume that testing pH at that FC level is pointless since it'll register high, right? where do I go from here? I turned off the SWG for now to let the FC level come back down...is the best plan of attack now just to wait for that to come back down before running a full set of tests?
 
pH test will be high. Test the TA. That will tell you if you have an issue with low pH.

Your FC should come down over the next few days.
 
FC coming down slowly, taking roughly two days to drop by 1 PPM. i was at 12.5 on thursday afternoon/evening when i tested last.

my CYA last i tested before leaving for a month was 80, so it is likely a little higher now after using four pucks while we were gone...so i guess my FC target is in the 6-7 range. assuming i'm losing roughly 0.5 PPM FC per day and the days are continuing to get shorter, i have two more questions...

1) what should i let FC fall down to before turning the SWG back on? should i turn it on right when i get to 6 PPM, or wait til it falls a little lower since i'm generating more than i'm losing each day? (that kinda leads into question 2...)

2) i was generating 1.1 PPM per day, with the SWG running for 8 hours a day at 20% (the lowest number i can set my generator at). should i adjust the runtime (since i can't set the percentage any lower) or just leave it alone when i turn it back on?
 
Keep the FC around 6-8 ppm. So I would turn on the SWCG when you see 8 ppm or below.
Lower the runtime to 6 hours and see if you gain or stay steady.

Sorry for your loss, crackers. I see you haven't retested your CYA, but let's say it is at 90. I noticed your CH is quite high, >900. Would you entertain a partial drain in order to reduce both? Might alleviate cell scaling potential.

as for the partial drain, yes indeed. we are having our rocks stripped and repainted and some minor repairs on them done at some point over the next few months (getting the bids as we speak). been holding off on it and planning to do the drain and refill at that time, since we'll have to take the water down at that point anyway.

i was waiting until i get to a normal FC level before doing a full set of tests, since i know the pH reading will show high where i'm at now. will the high FC affect any of the other tests?

Not that I am aware of. Apologies I forgot that your waiting to test was due to your high FC's impact on pH. For me I have to an electronic pH tester so I can test pH in the presence of high FC.
