Hi all, this forum has been very helpful as I learn how to care for our new pool!

I have a 10,000 gal fiberglass pool that has been causing some concerns for me regarding FC. The pool is 5 weeks old, and initially I used a granular chlorine (25lb bucket) the contractor gave me. I’ve switched to liquid chlorine after finding this site. My PH and other readings appear normal across multiple tests at 2 pool stores (will be ordering a better test kit).

I can’t maintain FC, I’ve had my water tested and the CYA is 112 (🙁). I added 1 gallon of 10% liquid and it maintained high levels for 2 days, and nothing (maybe .5) today. Prior to this shock dosage, I was adding 26-39 oz per day hoping to maintain an appropriate FC level.

Is it plausible that one 25lb bucket of stabilized chlorine raised my CYA so high? I need to address this somehow, a drain and refill is complicated with a fiberglass pool, so I’ll likely have to do a series of small drains and refills.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Welcome to the forum!
If you have added 25lbs of Dichlor to your pool, that would add ~150 ppm CYA to your pool volume.

What test kit have you ordered?
Get your FC to 10+ ppm and add 5 ppm per day, using liquid chlorine.
Read Draining - Further Reading
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.

Thank you for the reply, I’m looking at the TF-100 test kit based on what I’ve seen in this forum.

I'm encouraged by the water exchange process detailed in the link you provided. I’m thinking I should do this ASAP.

Wishing I had done more research rather than just blindly following my pool builders advice with the dichlor.

thanks again!

Great choice on test kits.

Check your fill water temperature versus your pool water temperature. In your area, your fill water may be cooler.

Wait for your proper test kit or you may not drain enough.

What's done is done, mo reason to dwell on it. Be glad you found this website before you went to a pool store to remedy your situation.
It is still a shame you will need to drain or exchange the water after only 5 weeks, but with pool store methods, you would spend lots of money on their chemicals and at the end would need to drain anyways.
