Hello everyone. After spending what seems to be an an exorbitant amount of money to keep my pool clean, I (finally) listened to my wife (I know l, right?) to decided to really read up on my own pool care with the TFP ebook.

I have a 19,000 gallon chlorine pool with an in-line trichlor chlorinator. I had been using calcium hypochlorite for t but suffered the scaling that we ended up investing on someone to descale our pool this summer. To prevent this repeat scaling, I ended up buying the non-chlorine oxidizer, buying more trichlor tabs that the pool stores are selling and using an algaecide to clear up any algae blooms. The pool is clear but I’ve been spending way too much money on keeping it that way.

Now that I’m transitioning to the TFP way, I want to know if I should continue to use the trichlor in-line feeder or just use bleach or liquid chlorine and leave the in-line feeder forever. I still have a 20 lb bin of chlorine tabs that I’ve opened already but I guess I can just eat up that cost in the short term to save in the long run.

Thanks for your guidance!

Welcome to the forum!
First thing is to order a proper test kit. I suggest the TF100 from TFTestkits.net. The Taylor K2006C is also a great kit.
You will primarily be using liquid chlorine on a daily basis. Keep the trichlor for when you may be away from the house for a few days or if you CYA level needs a bump.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.

Thanks. I’m making my way through the ABCs now and will be ordering the TF100 kit as well! Glad to know I won’t need to waste my trichlor purchase. Any suggestions for where to purchase the liquid chlorine?

Depending on where you are in Houston, there is a chemical company in the Spring area I believe that sells bulk liquid chlorine. You have to have your own containers and they have to have a specific configuration. Do a search of the forum. I will look to.

Or, you can get liquid chlorine at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. We have a Chlorine Tracker you might check out - Where to find Liquid Chlorine - Trouble Free Pool

This is the place. Call first and be sure to ask about the container.

Whew took a while to respond back as I fell sick the following day after I originally posted. I received my TF test kit today and got right on it. I lowered my pH with muriatic acid to 7.2 as my TA was 120 and was targeting the recommended 70 on the pool math app. Then I used Kroger concentrated bleach 7.1% to bring up my FC to 6 as I was at 3.5 With a CYA of 50.

My in-line chlorinator still has tabs in it. And I lowered its output to 1 on the dial. Should I keep it at 1 when I am doing my weekly and every other day testing with muriatic acid and bleach or should I just turn it off? You mentioned using it for when I am gone on extended days but I was confused as to how I should address it otherwise.

thanks for the tip on the chlorine I’ll be giving them a call soon!

You can let the tabs in the chlorinator finish dissolving. Do not add any more unless you need to be gone from the pool for several days and no one can add liquid chlorine.
