Short synopsis:
- noticed 7lb drop in filter pressure with no change in media
- had a couple instances of alerts on my SWG for low flow
- opened and cleaned filters then recharged with 9lb of DE slurry but pressure still low from norm.
- DE repeatedly deposited on bottom of pool after cleaning filter
- Opened filter 2nd time found DE all on bottom of filter tank but not on filter elements
- took off pressure relief and seals intact and it does drop to 0 when pump is off
- checked pump impellers couldn’t feel any debris
- switched intake between skimmers and main drains with no difference in pressure/flow

Long Story:
I had noticed that in the past couple of months or so the filter pressure on my QUAD 60 was significantly lower while on high than what it usually read. It sits around 20lbs+ clean filter but was closer to 16lbs now. During some of the recent warmer temps I would occasionally get a low flow warning from my SWG, but wasn’t constant enough to raise much concern. So with the start of the pool season coming I figured a good cleaning might help with whatever was going on. I opened it up and the filters were pretty dirty so I throughly cleaned it, rinsing the elements and flushing the DE that settled on the bottom out the drain plug hole. I buttoned it back up, purged the air and began to add DE slurry into the skimmer. I only noticed a very slight increase in filter pressure after I added the full 9lbs. I let it run for a few more hours to hopefully “bed” the DE better and expecting the pressure to rise a couple more lbs.
While in the process of adding MA I like to set the pump to max to help with the dispersing of the acid. I noticed that some DE appeared to have settled on the bottom of the pool. I figured maybe I just added too much and set the vacuum out to clean it up. Finished with the MA and looked at the filter pressure and it was still a good 7lbs lower than usual while on high. Over the next few days I noticed more DE was depositing on the bottom of the pool. Fast forward to today and after reading some of the other posts about this issue I set out to open up the filter and see what was going on. I popped the top off and noticed right away the filters had no DE embedded in them. It all was sitting on the bottom of the filter tank (what hadn’t returned to the pool).
I took off the pressure relief valve and the seals looked intact and good condition. Took out the basket in the pump housing and couldn’t feel anything on the impeller. I have an intake side valve to adjust suction on the main drains vs the skimmers and toggling between those made no difference either in the case of a blockage somewhere. I buttoned everything back up and ran it again but no difference in pressure. Makes sense for low pressure reading on the filter since it’s just going right through the mesh. But why is my pressure off and why didn’t the filter elements get coated with DE??

Jeff,

If you open a filter will new DE in it, most of it will just drop to the filter floor and not stick on the grids.. It will only stick once it gets dirty.. Pretty normal..

Unless you come up with a way to open the filter without disturbing the water inside..

Check the internal air bleed sock. Make sure it is seated firmly on the center pipe and not just set into the top manifold. I got careless the last time I cleaned my filter and ended up with DE at the bottom of the pool.

Best of luck...hope you get it figured out.

Jim,
Thanks for the info on this one. True as it may be I’m still curious as to what caused my drop in pressure even before I opened the lid if that’s not it...

Do you have a picture of the multiport valve label?
I have it set to Fi

I do not have a sock on the center pipe nor do recall one the previous two times I opened the filter housing. I have a wire mesh screen that keeps debris out of the pressure release valve and sits inside the black top filter retainer inside of the large spring that rests against the lid. Should this screen piece be pressed down on the center pipe?

What is the part number on the silver label on the multiport that has the barcode and the date?

It should be 261050.

The screen is part of the internal air relief tube.

It's supposed to be on the center 1/2" pvc pipe otherwise DE will go down the tube and get in the pool.

The wire mesh screen has nothing to do with the external air relief valve.

Yes. I have the same filter (Q80). That mesh fitting needs to be attached to the pipe, not just set into the top manifold. In your original post, you mentioned you added 9 lbs of DE. It should be 6 lbs for you, 1 lb for each 10 square feet...correct? Maybe you meant scoops?

This is the part I'm referring to...

Thank you for the info. I saw that the plastic part of the mesh had inner threads but didn’t see anything to screw it down onto, but I guess it was meant to just be a friction fit on that center pipe. It is now slid down on the center pipe.

Both old and new boxes of DE media I have say for a 60sqft filter that 9lbs of product should be used:

Thank you for the info and I have re-attached the mesh to the center pipe. Also, the most valve is part# 261050

The screen fitting is a press fit.

Double check the label on your filter. Here's a pic of mine...

Didn’t even notice it says 6lbs...I’ve just been following the DE box. Not sure how much of the 9lbs I have in there now since a good bit is spread around the bottom of the pool, but should I rinse and start over?

Unless you can vacuum to waste, the DE in the pool will end up back in the filter. Did you reassemble and check for DE coming out of the returns? If you can vacuum it up and the filter holds the DE you might be okay.

@Jimrahbe or @JamesW may be able to comment on the effects of adding too much DE.

It is back together. I’m pushing the DE around to try and get it pulled back into the filter but also have my robot vac running to help expedite the process. So right now the water is cloudy and hard to tell if it’s staying out of the returns or not.

How's your filter pressure compared to your previous baseline? I hate to ask, but how do your test results look? Any chance of algae since your pump has been down? If you have a multi-port, you should have the ability to drain to waste to reduce the amount of DE in the system.

Pressure is still 7lb low when on high from where it used to be. As slight as it may be, it looks like I am still getting some DE returned to the pool.
I do not winterize the pool in my climate so pump was still running 2-3 days a week. Here are my measurements as of this morning though:

FC - 4.0
CC - 0.5
pH - 8.1
TA - 70
CH - 400
CYA - 70
CSI - 0.22
Salt - 2600 (need to add some more)
