I am starting to get very worried about the liquid bleach supply for the summer. We check at Home Depot every few days, but majority of the time the cupboard is bare! Not opening yet, maybe another month or so, but I'm starting to think about converting to saltwater so I don't have to worry.

HELP! I am totally clueless about saltwater pools. Is converting a big deal? An expensive deal? Can the homeowner accomplish the installation of whatever equipment is needed, or do I need help for pros?

HELP! PLEASE!

Very easy to install and convert, I just bought and installed the circupool edge40.

they recommend you buy one at rated at least 2x the size of your pool.

look at discount salt for pricing, they seem to be the best and from what others here have posted will stand behind them.
They have a $1 upgrade usually go pick the next smaller size and upgrade for $1

With a 21,600 gallon pool you need a 40K cell. Look at the Circupool systems at

If you can cut and glue PVC and do 120V wiring you can install it. The exact details depend on your specific setup. Is your pump controlled by automation or a timer? What type of run do you have between your filter output and your return valves?

Post pics of your equipment and we can help more.

Before you add any salt, get a Taylor K-1766 salt test kit and determine what your actual salt level is. When I converted to SWCG last May, my salt level was very high (3200 PPM) without adding any salt due to having used liquid Chlorine for several years without draining the pool. I had a salt water pool and didn't even know it!

Between the SWCG, Robot and using hair nets in my skimmers my pool is a cinch to take care of.

I was lucky since I converted my pool a year ago with Circupool RJ 30+. One less thing to worry about with this virus stuff. The 40 is the right size for you. TFP recommends size the chlorinator for 2x your pool size minimum. So if you want to go larger no problem! Here's a link to a great brand comparison page. I'd look hard at the sale that allows you to buy an RJ 20 and get a 45 for one $ more.

If you do it yourself you're looking at about $1000 plus incidentals. Installation was a breeze! Just wire it so it gets power from the same place that powers your pump. Circupool was great to work with, superb customer support and their warranty was the best I could find. I looked at all brands and chose them based on $/lb chlorine production, warranty for DIY, and reputation here. There were a couple that were close on this basis. Tie breaker was a lot of satisfied owners here.

When you order your swg order a K-1766 salt test kit at Amazon or other online supplier. It's about $20, easiest drop test you can do, the most accurate test you can get, and has enough reagent to last for years. You need to measure salt before you add salt. You'll be amazed at how much salt is in the pool already probably around 1000 ppm. Most don't realize they have a salt pool already!

Once you decide you want to try it and if you have somebody in your family that you're afraid won't like it add the salt and let them try it. My wife did this and immediately loved it. I chlorinated with liquid chlorine 'till I got the unit installed. She'll never let me go back.

There are lots of threads on here about installation. And ask any questions you may have here since we sell nothing... just want to help and we have real experts. Beware of any advice you get from somebody that's selling you something.

Good luck!

Chris

You will also need to get about 10 40lbs bags of salt at about $7 per bag. You’ll know after testing. Not always fun to haul from the store to the pool. This year I might just pay for the home delivery to minimize being out and about.

Thanks to everyone for the replies!!!!!!!!!! Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner, I was waiting to get email notifications that someone had posted responses.....I must not have the settings set up correctly to get those notifications.

Let me discuss with the spouse. He doesn't know I was thinking about switching and since he is my "pool boy" for this kind of stuff, I'd better get him in the loop. It will be later today at the soonest before I can discuss with him.

Thanks again to everyone for starting off the suggestions.

I think homedepot will deliver for $8.99 so may not be a bad idea. When I was doing liquid chlorine I was debating ordering 10 cases And having them delivered

For 10 bags of salt the delivery is $35 plus tip in my area. This is what I am totally going to do once I figure out how much I’ll need for the season.

Ha, I was our yard guy for a while but wife fired me and hired a lawn service ;) mainly because we have some bushes that grow fast and are tall so you need special tools.
She did mention last year about hiring a pool guy, I figured for $150 a month ( for one trip a month ) I would be better off buying a SWG and a Robot :)
Plus I was using tablets and powdered shock, taking the CYA issue I was still spending $150 a year on chlorine

Thanks everybody! Just discussed with husband and he is gung-ho!!!! He's a very hands-on project do-er, so off I go to do more research on TFP before pulling the trigger. Need to find the thread or forum on here about SWG so I know what I'm talking about.....

Chris posted the comparison link above, once you know the size you will have a few choices.. I went back and forth between the RJ-45 and the Edge40 and picked the Edge..Both are great products.
I have a 20K pool and the Edge took my chlorine from zero ( with Ascorbic Acid still in ) to 8 in about 16 hours. Even surprised me!

If you can cut PVC and do basic wiring it's easy to install
If you want a super simple unit look at the Circupool Core, all in one unit
