Taylor test kit and ph meter.

Muratic acid to get me to 7.6, swim a lot, had rain last night.

Additionally, how does a lower PH equate to a higher addition of borax?

When and how as the pH meter calibrated?

pH of 5.6 with a TA of 80 fails a reasonability test. Aerate the water and retest using the OTO test.

Bypass your heater if you have a heater bypass until you have your pH sorted out.

AJ-I see what you were saying. Thanks for putting me back to reality.

Seriously have no clue how my meter and Taylor K2006 were both reading so low. Aerated for 30 minutes and both are at 8.

Glad I did not add 60 lbs of borax.

Ph meter was recalibrated less than two weeks ago.

Unless you added several gallons of MA your pH did not drop from 8.0 to 5.4.

EDIT: We posted at roughly the same time. Sounds like you got it figured out somewhat. I'm personally not a fan of these meters, whether from TFTestkits or not. Color matching pH tests may not be super-precise, but they are accurate and will rarely steer you that wrongly.

Edit: We did post at same time. Completely agree with you.

Lesson learned for me and hopefully others, test and retest and get advice here before pouring a bunch.

At least I’ll get a $45 credit from heb.

The Taylor test cannot read 5.4, so it did not tell you that it was that low. Your pH was probably down around 6.8 or so, a minor overdosage of MA can easily cause that, and then brought back up to 8 with some aeration.

Right Taylor didn’t say 5.4. I was going off meter reading and then tested with Taylor to confirm and yellow was below the 7.

User issue. Realized the cup I was using for PH meter was also the same cup I used two days before to pour muratic acid into pool.

I must not have cleaned it out enough and there was residue left in it

I would keep a separate set of cups and tubes for specific tests. Don't use stuff you measure chemicals with during your testing.
