New pool “manager” in Louisiana

Our family has had a ~26,000 gallon freshwater pool for about 6 years. My wife has always done the pool management, and her typical routine is to wait till something goes awry, sample the water, and do whatever the local pool supplies store says. I am a newbie and need to learn how to manage our pool. I hope I can learn a lot from you guys, and appreciate any all help.

Not really. We have an old, small blue box that only tests pH and chlorine. Thank you for replying, as that was going to be my first question. I was actually just researching this forum for test kits. I’m guessing the TF-100?

The only issue I’m having now is keeping my chlorine levels up with all the sun and rain. I have a chlorinator tower. Should I leave it maxed out? No algae, but I do have a dull film on my vinyl liner and brown pool steps.

Also, not receiving notifications.

Ever since we have had the pool. I’m guessing I have a metal problem. We have had to add water to the pool recently, as we have not had any rain, that is until today (2” of rain).

A pool store might be able to help you with a metals test. That's about the only test I'd use them for. If all you are using is pucks your CYA level may be very high. A better test kit would let you check that. If your CYA is too high and you have a metals problem a partial change of water might solve both.

Here’s what I have. As you can see, my wife, under previous management ?, dumped something from the pool store over the steps. The liner is clean/clear only in that area.
