my pool plumbing, kinda cool

Love plumping pics! Neat to see how everyone does them!

Look at all of those pumps in a row! What are they all for? I sure hope there is more room to work on them then there looks like from the picture or you will be playing Twister to get to them.

Is the PVC painted? Many paint their PVC. I do. It's pretty tough stuff, but technically PVC is not supposed to be exposed to sunlight. A coat of paint will help with the UV, and, more importantly, make your pad look even cooler. No glue, smudges, printing, etc. Do a nice job of masking and just spray it on.

Then label everything (have you?). Nothing says "pro" like labels. Pool equipment labeling kits are available at Amazon and online pool stores. Direction arrows and valve names, etc. Comes in handy when you're in a hurry, or when you're trying to get someone to adjust something while you're away and on the phone, etc. Like this:

Here's part of my meager pad, painted and labeled. You can see what a sloppy job my plumber did with the paint. Bugs me every time I walk by it!!

Your plumber also used dwv (drain, waste, vent) fittings to put it all together.
Those are not intended to be used in pressurized applications.
I've seen these before and it will probably hold up okay, it was just a shortcut on his part.

Mayor,

I know you are not supposed to use DWV fittings, but I have yet to see one that has caused a failure.

For the majority of pool plumbing there is just not any real pressure in the plumbing anyway..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Are you talking about my pad or the OP's? If mine: I explored this at length when I first suspected what you're suggesting, starting here:

90 degree elbows or 45s?

This is what I have:

If they are wrong for a pool, then there are thousands and thousands of us that have 'em wrong! They are a very commonly sold item on many, many pool store sites.

Myself and another concluded that they are Sch 40 and appropriate for my setup. Please let me know if you know otherwise. Thx.

You have seen the pipe break or just the glue joint... If the glue joint, I've seen plenty of schedule 40 with bad glue joints, so what makes you so sure the DWV is what caused it.. I agree that there is less glue joint available, but I just don't see it going bad unless something else is also involved.

Just to be clear, I don't advocate using DWV for pool plumbing, but if it is already there, I would never remove it over the fear of something going bad..

Both I have seen fail, generally the solvent weld.
Poor placement, making pipe runs do what the shouldn’t, stressing the run.
& melting.
It is not very common. & I likely see more pipes in a week than most do in a lifetime.

PG,

I guess my point is... if when you see a DWV fitting do you replace it automatically or just let sleeping dogs lie?

Would your rip up a well running system, just because you see a DWV fitting?

Well, until somebody can definitively show me how the following is not appropriate for a residential pool, I'll leave it alone.

If you look at the pic of my pad above, you'll see the depth of the glue sockets (not sure what that's called) of the parts in question are very much similar to the depth of the glue sockets on the other fittings and components.

Meanwhile...

Gilda, you can see what you're in for if you start flashin' pictures of your fancy pool pad gear around here!! ;)
