Hello, pool builder scheduled to come out tomorrow to go over pool design and pricing. Attached is a picture of the design he sent me, kind of seems like too much seating area and not enough swim area. Any advice on improvements would be appreciated. This will be our first pool build, and while this forum has tons of advice, all of the available options can be kind of overwhelming. Thanks!

Welcome to TFP...

More details and pics of you existing space would help. How do you plan to use the pool? How many people will use the pool? Are there small children? What is the pool depth? Lots of things to consider...

We just built our pool (in Clovis, I work in Hanford) and have quite a bit of seating in the pool. We love it. Partly because we have young kids and it makes it easy and fun for them and their friends. But also because I like lounging around in the pool -- I'm no lap swimmer. We have a step going the whole length of the pool on one side with sheer waterfalls above it. I love sitting there under those with either the heat running if it's cool out, or the chiller running when it is hot like this week. When I swim in older pools now I'm always annoyed there aren't enough places in the pool to sit.

My wife and I plus 2 kids(12,8 yrs). Pool use would be mainly us,occasional friends and fam. Advice on pool depth, equipment recommendations, etc would be appreciated

The pool looks huge to me but then we have just built a tiny pool. You will need the deck space. You’d be surprised how much space chairs etc take up. Our depth it 4-6 foot. My youngest is 6.5 and can’t touch at the shallow end but it won’t be long until he can and we have bench that he can rest on. I’m glad we went with the depth we did because visiting friend’s especially will jump in wherever despite being told only to do so in the deep end.

I do like the seating area, maybe I'll keep it to one side of the pool. We have kids and I'm picturing all the jumping around they would be doing, would like to keep it safe.

The PB will offer the equipment with the bid on the pool. Have them list all the equipment with model numbers, number of skimmers and returns. On depth I would not go less than 4'. our pool is 4 1/2' - 5 1/2' - 4 1/2'. works very well for us swimming and jumping (NO DIVING).

Will the pool space get full sun? Your area of CA gets plenty hot (we lived in Bakersfield) so another reason not to go less than 4'. With the heat are you considering a Salt Water Generator (SWG)?

Good luck...

Do I need saltwater generator? Pool builder swore against it. What are your thoughts?

Need a SWG...its not an absolute necessity with pros and cons. Only you can decide and yes there are many builders who will advise against them. There are many many folks on this site who have them.

I faced this very question when we built our pool just over a year ago. We decided to get it because of the soft water feel and lower overall maintenance. There is an upfront cost and the cell has to be replaced (probably every 4-6 years) and you will still have to augment with bleach as a chlorine source (primarily during winter months). Salt and metal around the pool do not mix but we don’t have any so I’m ok with it. Depending on what you are told or what you read there are those who say salt degrades stone around pools. Again for us I was ok with the decision as I believe the stone will definitely outlast me :)

Bottom line is I feel this is one of the most personal choices in owning a pool! I have no regrets and should we build again in the future I would make the same decision!
