Pool Deck Replacment Question

Hi,
I am new to the forum, appreciate everyone's feedback. We have owned our house for about 5 years, and inherited an 18 x 36 in ground pool believe the pool was installed in the 70's (believe weather king steel walled pool).

The pool deck is a mess, with prior repairs making an uneven surface that is worn and cracking. We would like to replace the deck, but have a few questions. The coping is top mounted, can the coping stay in place and remove the surrounding deck? We would plan to replace the plumbing and fence and add power. Are there any other items to replace?

I have attached pictures to help get an idea of the coping and deck.

Thanks,
Rob

Hey there Robsail! Welcome to TFP :handwave: We're glad you're here.

I am sure you can replace the decking, I just want you to be aware of is that you will need to make sure that when the construction crew jack hammers out that cement your pool should have a bonding copper wire around the pool (attached at spots and to pump) and attached to the stairs. If it gets broken they'll need to repair it.

Power run near the pool will be a great help if you want to run a robot for cleaning the pool, or just a boom box for music.

How's the equipment pad looking? While doing the deck that is the time to fix it if the cement pad is messed up.

Your correct, that’s a weathering & original weatherking top mount aka “universal” aka “8inch” coping the deck needs at least a 1/4 or 3/8” gap between the universal & concrete. (Screw always loose) A mastic expansion joint will not provide enough relief. Those tech screws are not very forgiving.
The Screws under the blue strip are meager & old 5/16” tech screws.

- if the bond is broken, that would not be fault of the demo crew, so it would be wise to just plan on having the pool bonded after demo. & of course permit the new work, so you have your municipal inspector liable if there is an “bond” incident or injury down the road.

If it were my pool I would wait until time to to replace liner (or comfortable with replacing liner) & do deck, coping, liner, steps, light etc.

With a closer look I see a retro corner stair which did not come with the pool construction. (rarely are retro hand rails bonded, lots of concrete or trenching would have been done) so if bond damaged or not, re-bond the pool if you do the deed.

(I renovate weatherkings by the dozen, so post anything on your mind)

Thanks for your feedback. Is this coping still available or a comparable replacement? The liner was replaced a few years back by the previous owner, not sure if we can deal with the deck in its current state unless we are forced to change the liner if it needs replacing.

Yes it known generically known as 8” universal top mount (cardinal industries still makes it) & probably about 3k to replace with like (market may vary) your decking is low because optional deck supports weren’t part of the build.

Deck replacement is a commitment, maybe do the whole 9 yards cantilever or paver on-top of panel & a low profile extrusion.
Chances are you have 30yr old pipes & skimmer, May want to replace those too while deck is removed.

We have an eerily similar setup. If you do go through with the work, please post back I would love to see what you came up with.

For a stop-gap to buy you time, I can suggest some things we did:

Spray paint the fence with black spray paint. It is so easy to do and you will be surprised how much better it looks.
Paint the deck. Have a reputable contractor do it. They'll power wash it, fill all the cracks, etc beforehand. The paint will really freshen it up and gets rid of the real eye-sores: the stains. We went with a sand color to get away from the "industrial" concrete look.
Paint the coping a nice white/off white. The blue line kind of dates the coping.

You would be surprised by how much better it will look and how much better you will feel about it. For 1/10 the price! But if you do go with the total remake, let me know. That's my ultimate goal.

Amen! Amen! Amen! Black fences seem to disappear from view yet the same fence in industrial dull aluminum stands out like a sore thumb. I wish they'd outlaw any other color but black (and maybe "Go-Away Green")

Great info, we can start a thread of DIY pool rehabs. I will be getting some estimates on the deck overhaul since we want to expand it a bit. However based on these it will provide us direction to update and or replace. The fence is the other big variable, and will need to be replaced if the deck is updated.
