Jandy (via Zodiac) only makes a max size 40k gallon SWG. My pool is around 35k gallons. I have that stupid Nature2 FusionSoft which is "ok" for a salt/chlorine generation (I will leave the metal cartridge out) but the replacements for when the salt cell goes out is expensive like twice any other brand. And it is undersized for my pool. Do people run 2 SWGs at the same time or is that just stupid? If so can I just plumb one right after the other? What cartridge would be best? I have the Jandy Aqualink RS so would be nice if it interfaced with it.

Why get two SWGs? Why not get a properly sized SWG? With a pool your size you really need to get a CircuPool RJ-60 or a Pentair IC-60. I have the CircuPool RJ-60 and have been very happy with it as it produces the most chlorine. I have mine set on a separate timer. Once you get it dialed in, you only adjust it a few times a season.

Here is a comparison of SWGs:

If I'm reading it correctly, you want to use equipment you already have? You can certainly Plumb in two swgs. There's lots of posts about it. Whether it's ACTUALLY cost effective is up for debate. To me, the convenience of one setting, and the life expectancy of the higher end units is worth it.

Either use the larger Circupool model that produces 3 lbs of chlorine gas per day OR convert to a Stenner pump liquid chlorine injection system. The Stenner pump route would be far cheaper option and allow you to dose your pool as-needed. The biggest challenge is just finding a place to put the reservoir that makes it easy to refill and maintain. If you can find a bulk source of liquid chlorine, that makes it easier. Salt levels can still be maintained for comfort.

My pool is new and not started yet. This is the equipment that was spec'd for me. It is what it is. Yes I agree I need a larger generator. So when the FusionSoft burns out I'll replace it with a 60 series but for now, I have what I have. I am just hoping that it will keep up with what I actually need even though I might need to run it 24 hours a day. I guess once the system is running I'll see what is needed to keep up with demands and plan accordingly for the replacement SWG. I'll make sure to keep chlorine on hand in the event it burns out prematurely.

If the pool is new, ask the PB for them to remove the FusionSoft and not charge you. You do not want that system installed as it will stain your plaster, all of the plastic skimmers, weirs, etc. and turn blonde hair green.

Ask them to leave enough piping for a SWG and install the CircuPool RJ-60 yourself. I'm a middle aged woman with little experience and weak hands. My 20-something son with zero handy experience helped me and we got it installed in a few hours. I'm sure more experienced person could have installed it sooner, but it really was easy.

It will not be able to keep up. It only produces 1.25 lb of chlorine a day and that is running your pump 24/7.

If you decide to leave it in, you will need to remove the metal balls from your Nature 2 cartridge. I had the non-SWG version installed in my pool and I regret that decision as my plumbing and plaster were stained. Read my post on how to removed the metal balls: How to Remove Metal Balls from Nature 2 Fusion

Thanks! Yes the CircuPool RJ-60 is the way to go. I asked my PB if I could get a credit for this gimmicky FusionSoft but I heard they get a big kickback for pushing them due to the overpriced damaging mineral cartridges. The Chlorine output of that system is pitiful. I asked my PB before if I could switch it out and they really balked at it. If I do end up having to keep it I will not use the mineral cartridge. It looks like the FusionSoft and the RJ-60 are the same physical size so I imagine I can easily swap it out when the time comes.

Aren't you the one buying the equipment?? Who cares if he gets a kickback. Tell him you've changed your mind and don't want it. If it's not installed he can just get the kick back from someone else). I don't see how he can force you to install it.
+1

If the PB is not willing to do a substitution, just have them leave them both out entirely and remove the items from your bill. You won't be adding salt for the SWG for a month after filling, plenty of time to install a proper SWG yourself.

They already installed all of the equipment. It is sitting there waiting for startup. So at this stage it may be too late. I asked though.

No one answered the question if you can add them one after the other. The answer is no you should not install them that way.

They should be installed in parallel due to a couple of reasons. The first is the amount of salt available in the second SWG would be lower due to it being converted to chlorine in the first SWG. The other reason is that there are gas bubbles created inside the SWG and those bubbles will flow into the second SWG causing less water contact with the plates therefore less output out of the second SWG.

The downside of running in parallel is the pump will be required to run at high speed to generate the required flow through both SWG's.

One issue also is those plates do block some of the water flow. So in series they would block even more. I have two intex swg in series running for 15 months this way with no problems but they are in bypass leg.

Not sure if the gas bubbles or reduced salt affected my chlorine production significantly. If I had a larger pool, I would not consider two SWG because of the complexity and that you would need go beyond the low cost Intex series. If you are spending that type of money, I would do it "right"

I also run two Intex SWG's, but in parallel to reduce head loss. There is a link in my signature to the install.

With that said, if I was the OP I would remove the current system, install a correct sized system and sell the original unit.

Eventually you will likely want just one oversized generator for your pool but I can see the value in not wasting what you have. You could certainly plumb in two and automate or put them on a timer.

This was Jandys' reponse.

Currently, our chlorine generators max out at 40,000 gallons.

Generally, if the pool is greater than 40,000, builders put two chlorination systems side by side to accommodate.
