Last summer I changed my heady assembly because I was loosing water via the backwash while in filter mode. A couple of days ago I noticed the same issue (reopened pool two weeks ago). I thought initially that I was sloppy with the handle positioning but it's more than that. Could the head assembly really fail after a single summer use?!

Did you ever turn the dial when it was really cold near freezing weather, so that you
could keep water circulating to prevent freeze damage? That could tear the spider gasket.
I tore mine a little last winter switching it to drain out excess water.

I don't think so. It was working correctly during the first week I think. Here's a picture of the spyder immediately after removing the head. It looked uneven and flimsy new so not sure if these pictures are good or bad!
