    Is this just regular algae?

Interesting idea that I'd never thought of. So just take the wand part of the pressure washer down into the water and pressure wash it off. That will be a whole lot easier than the wire brush method. I have on the order of 100 spots. All pretty small, but plenty of them. I like that pressure...

New pool owner -bought a swamp

I went through a similar swamp experience with a pool when we bought our current house. With ours, we discovered while draining it that there was, in fact, a dead body (of a deer) at the bottom. We have an earth filter, not sand, so I can't offer much in the way of advice on that. I will say...

    Is this just regular algae?

That's what I was thinking, but mine doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the example pictures so just wanted to get some perspectives. If I scrape them off with a fingernail I do feel the "waxy barrier" mentioned in that link. I guess I'll consider myself fortunate that they're not as big and...

    Is this just regular algae?

This is our sixth season in our house, which has a plaster pool that was basically a swamp when we bought it. It cleaned up pretty well and we haven't had any significant issues, but I do have an algae question somebody may be able to help me on. I'm familiar with the traditional green algae...

The New Pentair SuperFlo VS or VST??

There's a comment in the manual in the RS-485 section that says some controllers that work with the Intelliflo won't work with the SuperFlo. Possibly the protocol is different.

    Tiles popping off

I'd start by asking again for clarification from the cement contractor. If he won't give a straight answer, that's not a good sign. If he says he used "roofing paper" then it increases the likelihood the problem was with the tiling job, not the decking. Next, I'd go to one of the areas where...

The New Pentair SuperFlo VS or VST??

I can't speak to whether your pump supports RS-485. But I can tell you my experience using multiple Pentair VSF pumps on my Jandy controller. The main filter pump (tagged "Filtration") works fine when connected with power on all the time and just using the RS-485 to turn it on/off and control...

    Tiles popping off

There's the possibility of miscommunication / mishearing here. Is it possible somebody said "roof paper" and somebody else heard "newspaper"? Seems possible the decking is fine and the problem is the mortar/grout was run right up against the decking rather than leaving a gap. Seems like an...

    Re-plastering 33K Pool & Spa

Not sure if this matters, but I think a very thin skim coat had been applied to the plaster at some point in the past. Maybe a cheap job before they tried to sell the house. The reason I think that is because there are many places around the pool where potato-chip thick parts of the plaster...

    Re-plastering 33K Pool & Spa

Three years ago we bought a house with a pool. Getting it running was an adventure. The house was a foreclosure and the pool was untouched for three years. It was a swamp, complete with a dead deer on the bottom that we didn't know about until it was drained. But that's the past, and it's...

    Flaking plaster

Thanks for the reply, Jim. How thick is the plaster typically? Like, how do I know if I'm through the plaster and touching the gunite? And how does plaster typically fail? If it has to be redone I'm fine with that. It's just that I had a pool guy looking at it when it was empty a few months...

    Flaking plaster

This is my first season owning an 18 year old pool in a house we bought this spring. Pool had been unused for 3 years, was a disgusting green swamp, and we had it drained and acid washed. Came out looking great. However... When the guys were draining and cleaning it the business owner...

    Where To Plumb in SWG

I'm leaning more toward going that way the more I think about this, where I live (outside Philadelphia), and my operating season (late May to late September). Yes, they're close and those are the options if I want the SWG to hit both the pool and spa. Problem is the U requires adding four 90...

    Where To Plumb in SWG

Here's a link to a photo of the plumbing coming out of the heater: Shared album - Mike Widner - Google Photos My automation controller, SWG, and valves are all Jandy. The pumps are Pentair, but the Jandy stuff talks to and controls the pumps perfectly well. My setup will run pool and spa as...
