Pipe Fitting Leak ONLY During Abnormally Cold Weather?

I am a veteran owner of an in-ground, vinyl lined, 25000 gallon pool for 17 years. Pool pros or other veteran owners: have you experienced a temporarily leak in a pool or pool plumbing during unusually cold weather events? Here is why I ask: Here in Charlotte, Tuesday and Wednesday, we had a...

    Low Suction Through Vacuum Head

Problem solved!! After 9 months of frustration, it turns out, it was just a bad connection with the cuff at the end of the hose to the hose itself - the end going in to the skimmer. Ironically, this was the first thing I troubleshot last May. At that time, I brought a brand new pool hose...

    Low Suction Through Vacuum Head

I think so. The pool guy I used to have for several years showed me how to put one end of the hose up to a return jet to force water in and air out. With this method, the hose would get chocked full of water to the point of it flowing out of the end of the hose stuck up to the return jet...

    Low Suction Through Vacuum Head

Thanks for the tip. I always pull on the Hayward Skim-Vac, and it is "tight" to start with; I can't just pull it off. Then within 3-10 minutes of vacuuming, the vacuum is lost and the Skim-Vac comes loose. I am going to check the "stillness" of the water in the skimmer cavity.

    Low Suction Through Vacuum Head

#2 above refers to the DE filter grids - they were installed in 2004, replacing an old cartridge filter system. Initially, and for the first year or two, my DE filter ran a PSI of about 1, with the needle just above the resting point. As the filters got dirtied up, even with backwashing and...

    Low Suction Through Vacuum Head

Hmmm.... No, never replaced the skimmer plate. My skimmer plate has never had a rubber seal on it. It is all plastic that just sits on top of the skimmer basket, under water.

    Low Suction Through Vacuum Head

OK, I'll get a pic up here soon. Say, does anybody know if a motor or pump is getting too old can cause a slight air leak? I last changed out my motor 6 years ago. It is an Emerson ultra quiet. When the pump and motor re-starts every morning, it has not lost all of its prime overnight, but...

    Low Suction Through Vacuum Head

So a year later I am still trying to troubleshoot this issue. Low or no suction, only when trying to vacuum. Anybody know if CycoLac Ball Valves are prone to tiny leaks? My understanding is that a tiny leak won't show any effects during normal pool operation, but can during vacuuming. My...

NEW GRIDS - SAME HIGH STARTING PRESSURE

Thanks. Yeah, I always make sure the end of the hose marked vac head only goes only to the vac head. I look forward to vacuuming with the new grids to see what happens!

NEW GRIDS - SAME HIGH STARTING PRESSURE

Vac hose works great. In fact, this spring, I bought a brand new hose and tried it. Same result - low vac pressure. I do have a skimmer plate for the skimmer basket, but that actually creates the seal with the skimmer - leaves are sucked and held in the skimmer basket, not the pump basket.

NEW GRIDS - SAME HIGH STARTING PRESSURE

Very good pressure from the returns. I also did the "plastic sandwich bag" test, and let my skimmer suck it in. It easily made it back to the skimmer basket.

NEW GRIDS - SAME HIGH STARTING PRESSURE

I'd say the PSI is at least 7. Gauge does go to 0 when it is off. Three returns and they all have eyeballs, except one, the closest to the pump.

NEW GRIDS - SAME HIGH STARTING PRESSURE

By the way... I replaced the grids, in a continuing saga to determine why my vacuum pressure is much lower than it used to be. I have tried half a dozen things, including replacing the grids. But I have not tried vacuuming since I just replaced the grids a few hours ago, but it seems as if my...

NEW GRIDS - SAME HIGH STARTING PRESSURE

I have a Hayward pump (same on as DE filter install in 2004) and a FNS Plus 48 filter. My motor is a 3/4 HP energy efficient Emerson, about 6 years old.

NEW GRIDS - SAME HIGH STARTING PRESSURE

Just installed all brand new 7 full and 1 half DE grids. They replace the original grids that were 7 years old. Several had broken tips that went in to the manifold, and, one or two had damaged plastic grids. But, the PSI starting pressure is the exact same, about 9 PSI, as the old! Years...
