PVC fittings from return lines sticking out of the surface - bad idea?

Hi all, Time to get to closing the pool again. This time, since I do not have a second person handy to help with the Cyclone blower while I plug the return lines, I came up with the following idea. Using PVC elbow joint with a male threaded adapter, and then a small bit of pipe, leading to a...

    Help with DIY pool closing

Got it. Btw, here is a better picture of my setup. (1) is the permanently closed skimmer line which I never use. (2) is the weird main-drain blowing solution using this blue valve. (3) is where I was intending to connect the Cyclone for the return lines, but your idea of using (4) is better.

    Help with DIY pool closing

Re:  Help with DIY pool closing I think I follow. However, here is my constraint. The union on the suction side is very tight and I have been unable to open it in the past. Hence I was intending to leave it in place and use a two-step process instead. One for the main drain, and the...

    Help with DIY pool closing

Re: Help with DIY pool closing When the PB did my closing (also in IN), they used the exact same flex hose to seal the returns as shown in Yunfeng's thread. If I remember correctly, they unscrew the square cap from the hose which was now open at both ends. Then they screwed in the hose...

    Help with DIY pool closing

Re: Help with DIY pool closing Thanks. For the main drain, I have a valve on the blow out (you can see it in blue on the left most vertical). I was going to use the Cyclone blower at that point and then turn that blue valve off. All that while keeping the valve between the vertical and the...

    Help with DIY pool closing

I saw another thread on a similar topic, but since the setup is different, figured a new thread makes sense. I have a mesh safety cover installation, and am preparing to do a DIY closing for the first time. (Well I had kind of done it once before, but since then my equipment has been upgraded...

Giving up on Zeofiber (and DE filter in general)

In my second season as a pool owner now. Inherited a DE filter (details in sig), and last year, concerned about some of the health/env risks of DE, I decided to try the cellulose alternatives (picked Zeofiber). I don't know if it's because of the "finger style" of the Perflex filter, but I have...

Which variable speed pump to get

Not an answer but I have the exact same question :) My pool is a 15K gallon vinyl liner.

    Backwash hose alternatives

I have a DE filter (Hayward Perflex EC65 "bump-style"). It has what I believe is the usual style of bright-blue colored flat-rolled backwash/drain hose clamped to its drain port. Wondering if there are any alternatives to this style. Any search for backwash hoses leads to the same flat-rolled...

CYA levels before (mustard?) SLAM and other questions

I had added 4 gallons of 8.25% liquid bleach at around 11am today (was expecting it to go to 20+ ppm after that). Did not measure the FC. In the evening at around 7pm, the FC measurement was 5, and CC was 1. CYA is still too low to register (it's been dissolving in a sock since this morning)...

CYA levels before (mustard?) SLAM and other questions

Oh I'd completely forgotten about the DPD one!! Was only thinking of the "normal" test. Thanks for the reminder jblizzle.

CYA levels before (mustard?) SLAM and other questions

Thanks OTPirate and pooldv! One question about the SLAM process - I think I'm supposed to monitor it every 2-3 hours and "top up" FC levels to the SLAM value if it has fallen off, right? But for my situation, the SLAM FC level is 24 ppm. This is way more than the test-kit's Cl PPM level...
