It depends on the size of your pool. Is it a permanent pool, or a small seasonal one? If moisture gets underneath the pool and keeps the wood wet it's going to start decaying. I would recommend putting it on solid ground.

My husband dug a trench all the way around our pool and installed a French drain covered with gravel. Every spring I apply ant and weed granules to prevent problems. We have no drainage problems at all. The gravel doesn't have to be replaced like mulch does.

It's amazing how many people on Facebook post pictures of their kids swimming in green, murky pools. I can't stand the thought of it. I guess OCD can be a good thing sometimes. If my test results aren't perfect, no one gets in our pool.
