There is a drop in replacement for the motor. A.O. Smith V-Green 1.65 HP Round Flange 56J Variable Speed Motor - ECM16CU - INYOPools.com I have been through 2 of these though and they both failed within a month. Your luck may be better than mine though.

I thought about that. I think it would be possible if I removed the motor from the pump. That would lower the diameter of the pipe going into the pump to 1.5" from 2". That's probably not a big deal right?

That's a coupler butted up against the threaded fitting. If I cut the threaded fitting off I'll have to remove the pipe inside the coupler to keep going. Did you have something else in mind?

That's correct. I've seen a lot of videos on youtube about people removing pipe from fittings but I worry about the seal on the old fitting.

I’m installing a salt water chlorinator, flow meter, and sacrificial anode. so I’m going to be moving my filter back a bunch for room. While I do all this I would like to put in a union before the pump because I’m going to get a variable speed sometime next year.

I’d like to move my pump back about 12” but there’s only fittings and no pipe to cut. Does anyone have any advice for me on how to get this done? I have attached pictures of my setup. Thanks!
