I should probably add that we raise the pool deck 3 feet with fill dirt, a.k.a. Florida sand, so yes, it’s very soft

It was probably just a bad assumption on my part as there was no evidence of a leak as far as water level dropping, I was just surprised at seeing a 4 inch gap below the pavers as I was pulling them up. Good chance the paver installers did a poor job and compacting around the leveler.

Appreciate the tip, I’ll check my return next. Would you also check the skimmer to the right of the leveler?
