The deeper your shallow end the less the slope/transition will be to the deeper end. I would go 4' to 6.5' 6.5' gives you better chances of doing a cannon ball without hitting your bum.

When your test kit gets there do the CYA test and let me know what it is at. If it is low enough then you can use the stuff they sold you. We shall see when you are able to test.

I love my sand filter! No matter what kind you get (Sand, cartridge, DE) get the biggest one your wallet can handle. Pump should be a variable speed if at all possible. If that is too rich for your wallet then a 2 speed would work.
