Strap wrench worked to loosen the outlet coupling. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fix the leak with re-tightening it with lube on the threads. Now I can't get it to loosen again. I'll try again after I drain the filter to clean the grids.

Thanks Richard! I will go get one now. I'm hoping that using lube and teflon tape on the threads and re-tightening will fix the leak. Fingers crossed!

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go with the suggestions and keep the eyeball in. Now I have to figure out how to fix the leak... I only have one working retun, so that's our only option.

Is a return eyeball necessary? My filter pressure is 19 with the eyeball in and 9 with it out. With it in and facing up and toward the shallow end, the surface of the pool water moves and is rippling. Without the eyeball the top of the water is close to stagnant. I've used a return eyeball...
