Good questions. The pump display is blank. The old timer is still present and sits between the breaker & pump. The switch in the timer is set to 'on'. The pump is standalone. I do not use any automation devices.

Brief update. The basket catch filter right in front of the pump was pretty full. Cleaning that resolved the 'bubbles coming through water return' problem pretty quickly. I still woke up to an empty reservoir (the basket catch location) and see no above ground evidence of a leak. Shame on me...

thanks for all of the assistance. I met with one of the contractors I am accepting bids from today about automation. Seems that since I am 'just a pool' (no spa, no heater) my contractor opines that automation does not provide much value to my situation.

Thanks for the explanation. FWIW - that pump is about to disappear. It is dead and getting replaced in this larger project. So the entire configuration is open to redesign
