    Huge CYA Drop

I am going to shock tonight taking advantage of the low CYA so that should take care of any bacteria. I will then will start adding CYA to bring it back up.

    Huge CYA Drop

FC 4, CC 0, TA 100, CH 325, Salt 3400. Water temp on 8/2 84, yesterday 81. Same bottle of reagent was used on 8/2 and yesterday with an expiration of 9/2025. No autofill, one top-off in the last month due to evaporation. I always perform the test the same way, outside, back to the sun.

    Huge CYA Drop

On 8/2 I tested at 75 CYA. Started to notice that my SWG wasn't keeping up so tested yesterday and got about 20. No backwash, no rain overflow, nothing unusual. What would cause such a massive and fast drop? I have been maintaining the pool for 9 years and don't think I have ever experienced this.

Pentair Triton TR100C Leaking Closure Lid

I removed the closure to check the sand level and now can't get it back on without leaks. I replaced the gasket (new) with a coating of pool lube but still leaks. It is losing all pressure when the pump is off which is causing me to lose prime, and my pump is higher than the pool so it takes...

Blue Whale Liquid Shock Chlorinator Date Code

You are both right. According to the Hasa website they make Blue Whale, and an old TFP post states Hasa uses one letter followed by four numbers, first three day of year and last is year. Thanks!

Blue Whale Liquid Shock Chlorinator Date Code

That is all there is. I checked all over the box and the individual jugs.

Blue Whale Liquid Shock Chlorinator Date Code

Anyone know how to read their code? They only print a letter followed by four numbers. Not Julian like I am used to.

At what temperature does the Taylor test results become invalid?

I get a substantially higher reading when the water is cold. My last test one month ago with water temp 80 was 50 and I have not added any CYA since then but did backwash/re-fill which would have dropped the level. Today I ran a test at water temp 54 and it was 70. I knew that was way too high...

Adding chlorine/bleach to salt water pool in cold weather when SWG is off

I live in Austin and shut my SWG down for the season once the water hits about 60. You can get a three gallon pack of 10% chlorine, HDX brand at Home Depot for about $10 and it lasts a long time at these water temperatures. And in my experience Jim is right, shutting down the SWG more than...

Two holes in bottoms of both skimmer - should they be open or closed?

I have the same question. I have two skimmers and each one has two holes on the bottom and a cover that can be rotated to either partially or totally cover one of the holes. I have left them all open since that is how they were when I bought the house. Each skimmer and the main drain have their...

Normal pressure rise rate for a sand filter

I swapped out my existing check valve with a FlowVis (easy DIY job). I find it is much more effective to monitor the drop in flow rate than to rely on the pressure gauge. I have a Pentair sand filter and they recommend backwashing when the flow rate GPM drops by 30% below the clean rate. I get...

    Keeping FC up

After using dry CYA when I first got a pool I switched to Natural Chemistry liquid CYA (they call it "Instant Conditioner"). Works in the water immediately since it does not have to dissolve and is a liquid so dosage is easily measured in any measuring cup. No dangling socks in your pool for...

    Where to get muriatic acid?

I buy mine at Home Depot. Comes in a package of two, one gallon bottles and is the same strength as what they sell at Leslie's. Home Depot keeps them out so you can just grab it yourself. At Leslie's you have to wait for someone to get it from the back.

Why are Pool Builders Steering Me Away from SWCG's?

When I was in pre-purchase of my house that had an existing salt pool (my first pool) I had a pool builder come inspect it. He said salt pools "are almost impossible to keep balanced" and quoted a conversion to a Rainbow Chlorinator. Fortunately I did my homework and found this site before...
