If you are having alot of people use the pool, I suggest adding 5 ppm of liquid chlorine before the party. After about 3 hours, take a water sample and run FC. If in target, no action. If not, add more liquid chlorine.

After everyone is done using the pool for the day, add another 5 ppm of liquid chlorine.

That way no need to mess with your SWCG settings as they are dialed in for normal use.

Stop adding stabilizer. 70 to 80 is the highest you want it to be in a SWG pool.

You didnt post any test results for CC. Use the FAS-DPD and test for that. Level should be .5 or lower.

Manage your FC by using the FC/CYA chart for regular maintenance
Pool School - Chlorine / CYA Chart

If you are going to have a party and high bather load, use bleach and raise the FC by 4 or 5 PM above recommended levels. Its perfectly fine to do that and will get used up fairly quickly, think of it as an extra layer of short term protection.

After the party is over, test your FC as soon as you can and raise your FC back up to recommended level if you need to.

that's a whole separate Q I have but not today.

I'm sorry, I am not good with this stuff = what does adding 5 ppm chlorine translate to? I don't have to try and figure it out by googling. I have people coming at 12:30 and I am stressed!

I just noticed it looked like I added double stablizer. I didn't. I Have always always always had trouble keeping the CYA up. I wanted it at 75 so I just put in half a sock....

In a 19k gal pool, add about 150 oz of 8.25% bleach, or 200 oz of 6% bleach.

And when things calm down, getting familiar with use of the Pool Math tool will help you a lot :)

You say you have trouble keeping CYA up? CYA is not consumed in the water. The only way to lose CYA is by draining and refilling. Do you exchange a lot of water due to rain? How are you testing CYA?

I'm with Dave. You most likely don't want it much higher than 70.

We have lots of rain and do end up draining water off. however, bc I have no of really measuring the dry CYA, it's put it in a sock and let it dissolve slowly. I DO use the calculator but the calculator doesn't answer the question I had.

After using dry CYA when I first got a pool I switched to Natural Chemistry liquid CYA (they call it "Instant Conditioner"). Works in the water immediately since it does not have to dissolve and is a liquid so dosage is easily measured in any measuring cup. No dangling socks in your pool for days. Just be sure to shake the jug really well before using.

So we added water this morning. I tested everything and added one whole 128oz 12% bleach and that was this morning. Four of us were in the pool and I checked it at 2:45 and it was 9. My question is: if the FC drops, how long should they stay out of the pool after I add bleach???

With pump running and you pour the bleach into the return stream, at most 15 minutes. To make it quicker use your brush and mix the water around were you poured the bleach.
