    Best cartridge filter

I have a Hayward 5030 filter and the time has finally come when I’m going to have to replace the cartridges. Any advice on whether to go with the Hayward replacements ($$$), or are there some aftermarket versions that are just as good? Thanks in advance.

    Electrical Panel Woe

I never considered desiccants before and think it’s a brilliant idea. I would probably have to check on a regular basis to confirm they’re not saturated, and we’re gone for 7 weeks in the winter, so that’s problematic. Thanks, Drew, for the suggestion. I’ll give it a try this winter.

    Electrical Panel Woe

Here is a photo of the innards of the box. The red ellipse on the left is the pump breaker that I replaced two years ago, and the one on the right is the pool light breaker I replaced this year. The other photo is the label on the cover that says “rainproof” and has the “3R” designation that one...

    Electrical Panel Woe

When I removed the defective breakers to replace them, the area behind them was perfectly clean. The box didn’t appear to be wet at all inside, but by the time I inspected it (maybe weeks or months later) it could have dried out. The whole system was installed in 2015 by certified electricians...

    Electrical Panel Woe

Here’s two shots showing the location of the equipment. The pool is above the equipment. You can see the steps to the pool level at the left of the photo and the retaining wall at the right. The electrical panel is unfortunately not sheltered by the walkway above.

    Electrical Panel Woe

I don’t know if this matter has come up before, but I wanted to get some thoughts. We have an outdoor area where all the pool equipment is located, including the electrical panel for the equipment. In the past three years we have experienced two breaker failures, one in the 220v pump circuit...

    Hayward Sb error code

Thanks for the tip. I don’t know if there was moisture involved on the circuit board, but there was a bit of cobweb material between the four contacts where the keypad ribbon connects to the display board (and also a few other places on the board). These were easier to see using a magnifying...

    Hayward Sb error code

I got an “Sb” (stuck button) error code on my Hayward H350 pool heater after a driving rainstorm totalling over 6”. After reading a bunch of research, I replaced the keypad, but the error code reappeared. Any thoughts on what else I might do? Thanks for any suggestions. Bruce

Dealing with pool cover pump hose freezing

We live in central Missouri, where there can be huge temperature swings all winter. Just because it’s January is no guarantee that we won’t have a few days in the 50s or even 60s, possibly entailing rain. And a snow (12”) that would completely cover the pump is a real rarity. So luckily I...

Dealing with pool cover pump hose freezing

Nothing is going to protect the water around the pump from freezing, but this will be a very slight amount (the amount that is always there, as your pump will not evacuate the water until the water is high enough [Maybe 2”?] to trip the water level sensor and start the pump). If that water has...

Dealing with pool cover pump hose freezing

For those who live in areas where the water in the discharge hose on your solid-cover pool pump can freeze, thus preventing the pump from performing its function, here’s the solution. Though not inexpensive, I purchased a Pirit (pronounced like pirate) heated hose. They were originally developed...
