Waxahachie, TX Owner Build - A race to beat the baby!

There's a technical term for that in the electrical trades, it's called -

A Rookie Hackjob

The IC comes with a standard twist-lock connector (male & female connectors). The male plug end is on the cell wiring and the female receptacle fits in a standard 1/2" electrical round punch-out on the EasyTouch panel. The wires on the female connector are attached to the EasyTouch IntelliChlor power supply.

Whoever did the first installation FUBAR'ed it and then tried to cover up the SNAFU with a hack job.

If I can, I'll open up my panel so you can see a proper installation.

Haha, clearly, I'm not an electrician!!! I will step back and learn from the masters...;-)

Yeah, good timing there.

My one weird thing was our filter not working right. Sending debris back into the pool. Turns out the "new" cartridge filter had been jerry-rigged inside and the flow was backwards and blew out all the cartridges with reverse flow. It had been returned by someone and re-shipped without QC.

You just never know, from the distributor or in the field, anything can happen...and probably will. It's all in how you (and they) deal with it. Your calm approach works well.

Thanks, everyone. Yes, this is still fixable. Matt explained it well and this is how the electrician told me it should have been done in the first place. He was the guy who was out to do my prebond by himself, and came back to do the antenna install, but they had a different crew with a different guy in charge for the main electrical runs and panel installation.

When the new female connector comes in this same guy will come out to install it for me (even though he showed me where it goes and it looks pretty straightforward). The new salt cell which has since arrived has its male connector and the two will be able to plug in as normal. Even if they didn't replace the female connector that attaches to the power center I would still be able to use the cut one, but it would just mean having to cut the end off of any future salt cell wire I needed to connect to it. I can't imagine that would be very good for warranty purposes, so I'm glad it hasn't come to that!

Wow, that's crazy! Was it taken of under warranty? I haven't needed to open my filter yet, so I sure hope I don't run into anything like this!

"Instructions-Destructions. Who needs 'em?..." Then, later on "She'll be right, mate." <--- I heard this a lot! Glad it will be alright in the end :)

With a perfect poker face, they would have blamed it on a coyote where I'm from.

I wish Jamie nothing but the best, but -- seriously? She is not an electrician, to the best of my knowledge.

No she is not but..........she can make sure it is not cut again. I am not a roofer but when one of the workers was being lazy about making sure to do good cuts when replacing some wood on my roof I was able to head him off and make sure he did it the right way that took longer.

Let me know if this is not self-explanatory -

Thanks for taking the time to attach those, Matt. They look pretty self explanatory and match up to what I recall the electrician said should happen. I'll keep these for reference, and when the electrician is out to install the female cord connection, I'll make sure he points out what I need to do. Since it should be happening before I've added salt to the pool, I probably won't have the salt cell installed yet, but I can at least bring it out to make sure I can do it properly. Considering the original electricians doing the install had so much trouble, I want to make sure I don't mess it up! ;-) :p

Hi Jamie!
I have still been following along and reading everything (WOW!!), but I have been working a lot of overtime, so not much time to comment at work.
I LOVE how everything is falling into place and errors and future problems are being exposed so they can be remedied BEFORE they cause issues. You are doing a stellar job staying on top of things all the while homeschooling all those kiddos as well as being pregnant.
I hope you are getting enough rest...

When do they grind and cool coat the deck, or did I miss that somewhere? You seem to be fairly close to finishing, right? Deck, fence, and plaster, yet? I'm excited to see the finished product!

Thanks, Denise! I've been following your build too and have seen how busy you've been with work. I wish I could decide to work overtime and help pay for all the little "extras " I want to add to our build! Your efforts will be worth it in the long run.

We are kind of on hold right now due to rain. It rained heavily on Sunday, and is raining again today, but it supposed to be dry the rest of the week. The fence is supposed to be delivered tomorrow and installation begun on Thursday if it's not too muddy. The plaster and spray deck companies are owned by the same guys, so we are trying to coordinate around the weather, but they didn't think this week would give them enough time, so we will have to wait. Ideally, it would be best if the sanding of the deck took place before or on the same day as the pool prep/cleaning. Then the plaster would be next and finally the spray deck. The idea in keeping the application of the spray deck last is that there will be less of a chance of it being marred by the plaster guys with all their equipment and spiky boots. The forecast shows rain coming in the early weeks of March with no long stretches of dry, so I'm not sure how this will all work out. It just may be awhile until those last things, but at least if all goes on schedule with my fence, I'll have the peace of mind of having that up.

good idea to do the spray deck after the plaster. They didn't marr mine, but they had some bluish powder that got on the kool cote that will probably go away when scrubbed but annoys the heck out of me.

Yes, now that you mention it, the guy in charge of the spray deck who suggested doing it last specifically mentioned the bluish coating that could get on the deck when the plaster guys did their rinsing. I'd rather avoid that if possible! I hope yours comes off without much trouble.

Pool fence is in!

Now to schedule plaster and spraydeck for next week, hopefully.

And getting back to questions about plaster... Does anyone have any recommended amounts of what I should have on hand for startup? If I'm going to do the bicarbonate method, I know I'll need some baking soda, but I'm not sure how much. Then there's muriatic acid, bleach and cya? I still need to figure this all out, plus using pool math. I'm guessing my pool is no more than 30,000 gallons, max, and that's a very generous estimate.

Finally, I want to get a really sturdy pole for brushing. I've seen the Skimlite ones mentioned here, but having one shipped might add more than buying something locally, I assume. Leslie's has a Gorilla branded silver pole for $50, but I don't know how good that is. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get and where, aiming for strength and durability, and factoring in price when shipping is considered?

Thanks for any help on all of the above. We are getting closer to completion!

Wall Whale....you want a Wall Whale....you NEED a Wall Whale!! Remember, only nylon bristles for the first year, then you can switch to a 50/50 nylon/steel bristle mix.

Get a telescoping pole. I've had your basic telescoping pole for over three years now without issue.

I also have a Gorilla brand XL leaf rake. Works great.

If you don't have one, you'll eventually need a vacuum head too.
