Yet another Texas pool build!

Can be a pain if they are too small (they need rinsed out too frequently) or if you have an algae bloom (they trap the sediment, can't be backwashed, and need rinsing frequently). Otherwise, no real worries. As is often the case, the reasons behind resistance of things can be telling.

Thanks! I purposely upgraded mine to be twice the sq footage from what the builder originally quoted so hopefully not too small.

Update from the PB is that supplies should be coming on Monday. I am assuming that means that they'll start working on Tuesday hopefully. Hopefully there is plenty of supplies now.

PB also wants to build another wall on the high side of our pool to make the drainage easier. I am waiting to see how much that will set me back. Also I asked for an upgrade to the 8ch instead of the 4ch controller so I can control landscape lights etc... The quote he gave me is really insane. I honestly don't know where it came from. The upgrade cost is more than if I bought the entire system online. If I look online and subtract the cost of the 4 channel from the 8 channel it should be about $500 or so. I figure they'll have some mark up but they are almost 3x the difference. I told the sales manager the price was insane and I didn't want to upgrade it for that price. He said he would check again on the price. They owe me about $1300 dollars for removing the auto fill and not having to raise my deck so I think they are trying to get back what they owe me. I'll see what happens when he calls me back tomorrow.

The supplies coming in on Monday is great news for sure.

I wonder if they are also trying to "get back" some of the money they lost with the new people having to take down and redo all of the stuff the others messed up.

Is the wall building part of that? "Oh I know! We will build walls so we can recoup some of our money." I hate to think like this but...............better I say it and it not be true than..........

The wall makes sense actually based on the drainage. I don't think my girlfriend at this point would try to take advantage and it was his idea. He actually said if he had lots of block left he would build it without any charge but I think it is going to take more than he thinks based on his previous estimations of wall block orders.

I honestly don't know where they came up with the number for the upgrade to 8 channels on my controller. It is way out in left field. I could understand if it was the price with installation if there was no controller in my system at all. In reality though the 4 channel already has installation baked into my contract and I don't see how the 8ch requires any more labor since they are hooking up the same number of things. To me it should be the difference between the two. The web price might be cheaper but that means my existing controller should be more too.

That is awesome to hear about the wall being a good thing for drainage. He really seems to be trying to take good care of your pool and area!

8 channel- What if you buy one and tell them to keep the 4 channel one?

I want them to warranty the entire thing and I think if I provide my own it could cause warranty issues. Worse case scenario is I'll have them put in the 4ch and live with it for a couple years until the warranty is up and I know things are working properly then buy a new one and sell the used one on ebay for a little bit. The overall cost to me will still be less than they want for the upgrade.

Turns out he made a mistake on the upgrade fee. He looked up the cost of a PDA-PS8 instead of a PDA-P8. The PDA-PS8 is way more expensive because it is for a pool/spa combo instead of just a pool. That explains the price difference. I'll probably be upgrading to the 8 channel.

My 2 cents on cartridge filters.. I'm a new pool owner since May of this year. I've cleaned out the cartridges twice and probably going to have to do it again in the next 3-6 weeks (darn you, AZ dust storms!!). It is so easy to do, and although the first time I did it, it took over two hours, the second time I was watching the pressures and caught it on time and it took about half an hour for four cartridges. I love mine, but I have no experience with a sand filter at all.

Watching your build with great anticipation and best wishes!

awwwwww good job! That was the best way to handle it!

Kim

Thanks! I am sure it was a genuine mistake but at the same time I think he knows that I will catch his mistakes. I am pretty anal and I am sure they know this already. Hopefully we'll be done with this soon..

So do you need to update us with pics??? When you talk about having a wall put in I need to see where! Lol!

Here is a picture...

The pool blocks the flow of water in my lot. The design currently has a dip where the water can collect so they have to build up dirt there to guide the water on my lot like the red line shows. If they build a wall where the red line is the water during rain storms should follow the water around the pool and not get caught up. So the idea is to have the water either travel down the red line either by building up with dirt/grass or with a retaining wall. If the cost is too high I'll go with the grass dirt option and they'll be responsible for the drainage of my lot. I was clear about that from the beginning so if they think there will be issues with the drainage that is on them.

Thanks for your input!! I figured the cartridge filter wouldn't be an issue. I don't know why they would be against it. We will see....

Good for you for making sure they are to take care of your drainage! A wall right there neat. I wonder if they could/would just make it part of your patio around the pool? If not you could make it a pretty planter or such.

It would have to be a planter. It would be the height of the bond beam which is 18" above the height of the deck.

Thanks for the visual, Umm! What's the height on that side up from the ground?

Right now I think it is 30" above the ground. That is at the pool. It would be less high where I have the line because that part of the lot might be 12" higher. Down near the trees it would be over 30" I am guessing. I haven't measured it out. The idea is to get rid of the area of the pool that can catch the water.

So it has been awhile. Monday was the day the supplies were supposed to show but the truck for the stone yard broke down and they couldn't deliver on Monday. On Tuesday the supplies showed and they started working. We have been so busy this week with school meetings, church, and volleyball games that I haven't been home until after dark every night. It was killing me because I wasn't able to see anything until this morning. I would say right now they are about 90% done. There are a couple small things I want fixed but we are almost there! I think another day or two of the paver guys and then we'll be ready for landscaping and finish electrical. I am so excited. The pavers turned out way better than I imagined. I am also so thankful that we leveled the deck to one level instead of having the concrete be 18" higher. My deck seems so big now and I should easily be able to entertain down there with tables/chairs etc... I think before half the 900sq ft of decking was wasted because of the steps. It is much more usable now.

Anyway they have to finish the walkway and under the deck on the house. They also have to put in the stairs and set the boulders on the sides of the stairs.

The one thing I don't like is where the walkway to the other deck starts it is perfectly straight. None of my other transitions are straight so it really sticks out. I told them and they hopefully will fix it. It just looks off. Here are a couple photos:
