1963 pool resurection

This thread is awesome. Love the tile and wish it could stay, but if it will cause problems down the line pool guy #1 has good advice. I have an old pool where the rebar is showing rust marks through in a few places and it is not cool, get those spots taken care of for sure.

yeahhh..... Stayrite is part of the Pentair company, but that doesnt mean that the different brand names have the same quality.
The Starite and Pentain equipment are of completely different designs.

pool guy #1 says he uses sta rite equipment and that it is the best there is. I wasn't even aware they made pumps. I always thought they were part of the Pentair company. any thoughts?

Interesting aside to this whole thread. Well, interesting to me anyway. I have always loved pools and swimmimg. This thread caught my eye because the pool in it reminds me so much of a motel pool I swam in for several summers in the early 1960's. My uncle owned an interest in the motel. Very, very similar, but the pool was in ElDorado Arkansas so probably not a Blue Haven pool. The two links to Ozzie Ausband's blog and Facebook page have opened up a whole new world to me. They are skateboard sites, but looking at the pools these guys cruised around and cleaned out so they could skate in has been really fun. He is a good writer too. If skateboards were around in the 1960's, I never saw them in Arkansas. I reminder them becoming common in the early 1970's.

Now that I have dated myself I will say this. This pool would probably qualify as an antique. Certainly vintage. Antique value is reduced exponentially when an antique is refinished/restored. The coping looks a lot more worn than the tiles in the pictures. I hope you can figure something out that will blend with the vintage look. If not keeping the tiles maybe using them as decorative tiles on the outside of the spa. Good luck.

unfortunately the coping and tiles will likely have to go in the interest of rebuilding a quality pool that will last another 50 years.
we are really just hoping that we can bring this pool back to life legally at this point. once that is established, then we will worry about aesthetics. we would like to, as ive said many times throughout this long thread, keep it as original looking as possible with all the best equipment of today to maintain and keep the pool clean with minimal effort.
the tiles will most likely be unusable after demoing since they will be either broken in the process or so full of whatever mortar was used to install 51 years ago as to render them useless. these tiles were widely used in this area back in the day and sadly no one sees them as anything remotely worth saving. they are basic tiles used by a certain company only to mark their installations. the only reason they are still here is because no one ever remodeled this pool. ccol, yes, to us. antique treasure, not so much. onward and upward.
if anyone knows of any place to get coping and tiles that reflect this type of pool and time period please let us know.
thanks.
I was also told to stay away from glass tiles.

pool guy #2 is real cool. down to earth and also very informative. says tile and coping can stay if we want. says hey, they sell glazed and unglazed tile so why should it really make a difference if the glazing is shot?
he has spoken with the building department and knows what we are up against. took some very accurate measurements and made drawings to show the building department and work backwards according to what they will allow.
things are looking good I think.
looks like we will be swimming after all.

Guy #3 canceled for tomorrow. He is currently on vacation and doesn't want to have to rush back. Will set up another appointment later.
Guy #2 is the best so far. Waiting to see what he has to say when I hear back from him in a week or so after another trip to the building department with the drawings.
Looking at some white bullnose coping and maybe some light blue 6x6 tiles similar to what we have now. Thinking about sticking with standard white plaster and intellibrite 5g color lights. Could be cool.
Also maybe 7' round spa raised 18" half in half out of pool.
Possibly sticking the equipment in the garage too if I can find the space in there. That would keep it out if the elements and leave more deck space. Any thoughts or concerns on that? Would just have to vent for the heater.

no new pictures as nothing has changed in appearance yet. trying to decide on who will doing the "patch work" and spa installation.
im pretty sure I know but waiting to hear back with some info from the building department and estimate on cost.
we are pretty much in the "waiting" stage now.
looking into equipment now... its looking like Pentair everything except ray pak for the heater.
by the way, pool guy #1's "better equipment than I can buy" turned out to be Pentair and sta rite.
