Hi just recently closed my pool and have a few dumb questions.

In my region we get below freezing but never deep freezes or for very long (Nashville, TN). My pool equipment pad is 5 ft higher than my pool and if I drain my pool equipment, blow out & cap the lines and put a gizmo in the skimmer is that all need to do? I assume my underground pipes are all safe, even if there is residual water in them because they are well below the frost line. Lastly, I lowered my water below the skimmers and then vacuumed out my skimmer after I put the gizmo in.

Am I on the right track?

Also, what is this hole for? I tried to vacuum that out too but it seems to have sand and stuff in it.

The only dumb question is one you don't ask. :)

Yeah. All the above ground plumbing needs to be empty. Iyou left some water in the underground pipes with a week blower, it'll be down below the frost line and ok like you suspected.

A second leg which was commonly run to the main drain back in the day. If yours has sand in it, it's plugged / was never used / abandoned. (y)

Cut a pool noodle in half and add one to each skimmer throat like this. It'll protect the mouth/throat if the cold lasts a while and water accumulates.

Thank you for the help, I appreciate it. Last question, what water chemistry adjustments should I make? Put some liquid chlorine in the pool or muriatic acid to balance PC?

For us to provide chemical recommendations, post a full set of results from your test kit...FC, CC, pH, TA, CH, CYA...

If your pool is closed and your pump is not running don’t add any chemicals.

Closed is closed.

Water tests are not going to be valid once the water is still and stratified.

The frost line here in Holly Springs, NC is between 5" to 10". My equipment pad is 3' higher than the pool. All I do is drain all the equipment on the equipment pad and put gizmos and pool noodles in the skimmer. I don't blow and cap any lines, I don't use antifreeze. I don't lower the water level in the pool.

You can't trust the testing without mixing it well first. Then you need to mix well after adjusting anything, possibly for a day depending on what was added. It's just not worth the hassle for most of us.

You cover the pool too? I'm just wondering what I am going to do next winter here in GA and my new pool.
