Rust on bottom of pump And it seems it has rusted through

I have a Hayward SP1580 1HP pool pump which I installed in July 2016. I take it in each year for the winter. There is a large amount of rust on the bottom and I was cleaning it off to paint it with Rust O-leum in preparation for next season. I noticed on the bottom seam holes. What can I do? Do I have to replace it? The price has doubled in 8 years!

Thanks!

Could you post another pic, but this time a little further back so we can see the entire area that is rusted on the motor? More than likely it will need to be replaced, but it would be good to see everything better. Yes, unfortunately just about everything seems to have doubled (or more) in price. :brickwall:

There are two ways that happens, usually. Leaking shaft seal, pump sitting in water. You can just paint it, but be prepared to get a new pump sooner or later. Getting just the motor and the needed shaft seal, gasket, O rings, is about $200.00. You can go that route, but by the time a motor rusts to that extent on that pump the impeller is usually needed as well. That's another $45.00 - $50.00.
You can get a complete pump like that with the same motor from Doheny's for about $160.00.

I can use any 1.0hp pool pump as a replacement?

The holes won't affect the motor as the entire inside is open at the front an back. I would guess that motor is making a lot of bearing noise.

That is an inexpensive pump made for the above-ground pool market. Check the price of in-ground models and you'll see.
Any brand of above-ground pump will work. It better to get one that is serviceable with parts available or warrantied from the manufacturer or dealer, like Hayward, Waterway, Pentair, Dohney's (private label, probably by one of the bigger manufacturers). But, yes, any 1hp above-ground pump will replace the one you have.

I didn't notice any new noises. Should I cover the holes with JBWeld? And should I paint the areas with RustO-leum? Thank you

Paint yes. JB Weld, not necessary as the entire motor is open from the front to the back. Sometimes there are holes in that area when the motor is new. Just don't let it sit in water if that is what happened. If the shaft seal is leaking, get it replaced, or get a new pump as the repair would likely be about the same cost as a pump from Dohney's. I don't work for them or own stock, but have seen their products.
