Need to replace valve used to top off my pool

Hope everyone is well.

First...this is a setup that I inherited when we purchased the house/pool about 7 years ago. I did not install this.

It is not ideal...the handle on the brass anti-siphon valve is way too small. The issue is the red ball valve is starting to leak a bit when I first turn it when filling the pool (there is a master shut off to this supply along the side of the house...and it is always off unless I am filling the pool).

With that said...does anyone have suggestions for a better set up here? Right now, the thought would just be to cut the pvc below the red ball valve and reconstruct using a bet brass top valve. But I am open to better, more sturdy suggestions.

You are on the right track. Cut the PVC ball out and replace with a brass valve then connect back to the PVC.
However - hard to see based on the angle of the picture but there is another valve at the top near the anti-siphon valve. That handle is attached with a nut. You can change out that handle to a larger circular handle and just use that rather than having 2 valves on the same line.

Standard sprinkler valve, though of bronze. Can probably be rebuilt easily. Take a picture and the name to a good hardware store. They should have parts.
For now, with the ball valve off, the T handle can be removed, large nut below the T handle can be loosened/removed, the nut and packing material taken out, lubed with a non-petroleum (pool) lube, and reassembled. Turn the red handle on, tighten the nut until the leaking stops and the handle should be able to be turned easier. Get a sprinkler-valve key, picture is a long one, but they make them shorter. Home Depot.

Thanks. I will probably take the ball valve out of the equation when I rebuild and just go with sprinkler valve. Thanks for the information and confirmation!
