Seems to be one thing after the other recently. About a month ago my Hayward pump was humming so I replaced the capacitor and until today it’s been working great.

Went to backwash because of a ton of rain and the pump stopped. Gave it some time went to fire it up and it caught flames for a few seconds and then kicked off.

The pump is 8-10 years old. So based on my setup . What are my most cost effective options as we will only be living here for 2 more years or so.

Here’s the setup. It’s a 28,000 gallon pool and currently a 2 HP Hayward pump .

I’m assuming it 100% has to be replaced. Please give me options .

Who knew that you’d literally “fire it up”?! At least you got 8-10 years out of it.

You can explore replacing the motor, but the pump is pretty old. Assuming you need to replace the pump, you may have a hard time getting another 2hp single speed pump. I only recently learned of a federal law passed in 2021 that requires all pool pumps under 2.5hp to be variable speed. I haven’t looked into it too much, but I also have a single speed pump and when it fails, I’ll be faced with a variable speed replacement. To make matters worse, my controller will also need replacement because it won’t support a variable speed pump. Your equipment looks older than mine.

When the time comes, I’ll explore a 2.5hp single speed option. Maybe that’s an option for you. I’ll never recoup the cost of controller replacement plus a new pump with energy savings.

If there is nothing wrong with the actual pump housing, i.e., no cracks, etc., or internals, e.g., impeller, etc., then just a new motor and GO KIT 3.

Or you could replace the motor (and GO KIT 3) and internals.

Not true. The 2021 law is about energy efficiency, not single-speed vs. variable-speed. There are plenty of 2 HP single speed pumps still available and likely always will be as manufacturers are likely to build new single-speed pumps that meet the 2021 law energy efficiency requirements (e.g., Hayward SP2615X20XE Super Pump XE Ultra-High Efficiency 2.25 THP). That is, manufacturers can no longer produce pumps that don't meet minimum efficiency standards.

And since you are moving soon, you can also replace the entire pump with a budget pump, e.g., XtremepowerUS, or other pumps made in China. Lots of folks on here have used these as replacements and gotten several years (3+) out of them, by which time you won't be there.
