Ph is very high

Why are you trying to hit the center of the range. Until you learn you pool, I would target 6 WHEN YOU TEST. If you have to dose higher, so you always test 6, so be it. That way, when you do have a high demand day and you end up at 4.5, you are still covered. #TeamRunHot.
thanks for your reply. So 6ppm is not too much chlorine for kids to swim? I’ve searched safe chlorine levels and I keep seeing 1-4ppm anything higher is a possible hazard??? I’m feel like there is so much conflicting info out there 😳

Stay with info here and don't mix. FC is safe if above min and up to SLAM level, for equipment and humans. I run mine 10-12, I have 4 grandkids. I would never let them near the pool if it wasn't safe.

It's actually less safe to have them in at low levels. We had one pool this week that was at minimums, had a log swim session, likely went below sanitizing level, and two kids got diarrhea. They raised there FC back up, next swim no diarrhea.

If you *really* want to dive into the deep end. Have at it...Link-->Pool Water Chemistry

Trust me, it's safe...

Ok I’ll stick with the high end of target range at 6ppm.

HOCl is the sanitizing agent in FC. EPA limits HOCl in water to 4ppm as being safe to drink. Drinking water has no CYA.

Follow the blue line for 0 CYA, and the FC level at 4ppm, that is 1ppm of HOCl. Rough stuff.

Take your pool water, 6ppm FC, orange line for 30 CYA, nets to less than 0.1ppm of HOCl

If you won't let your kids swim in it, give me your address, I'll send my grandkids. LOL.

Go Blue!
😂
I added chlorine 2 hours ago and just retested for the night and the level has not changed. It still reads 4.5 as it was 2 hours ago. My cya is 30 and ph is 7.9. Shouldn’t my addition show up within an hour or so.

You might have algae brewing. Do an OCLT. Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

Addition should show up within 30 minutes, if your pump is running.
Pump has been running. Water is crystal clear with no signs of algae. I’ll do an OCLT tonight. I usually make sure Chlorine stays above 4 at all times but it may have gotten down to 3 yesterday, which is still within my range.

There are soooooo many variables. Why are you trying to stay at minimum? You should focus on keeping FC high enough so you are always in range WHEN YOU TEST. If that means dosing higher, so you test in range, so be it. You are asking for an algae bloom.

I read though the information on the site n regards to winterizing, and am doing everything it says. I passed oclt 2 nights in a row, removed ladder, brushed and vacuumed. Water is crystal clear.
My question is…at what chlorine level should my pool be at when closing? Right now my FC is at 9ppm and I want to drain today and cover in the morning. (I will only have help available for a a short while in the morning).
I will lose chlorine between now and then. I’m thinking it will be down to between 5-6 by sunset. Should I increase chlorine now before I drain, or should I be okay until morning? Thanks!!!😊

What is your CYA. I'd close with at least 1/2 way to slam. So if CYA is 50, SLAM is 20, Normal level is 6-8, so 1/2 way would be around 14/15 would be great.

You can do the math for your CYA...

My cya is 30 and my slam is 12. I’ve drained the pool and cannot mix the water at this point. I can add some more chlorine and mix with pole if needed and if that would work. I have some polyquat, and it says to add 30 oz. For winterizing, but again, I can’t mix at this point.

I was at 6.5 at 6:30, so I used my pump to circulate the water and put a little more chlorine in. Retested and I’m back to 9. I think I’ll be okay. Thanks for responding. 👍🏻
I doubt your FC will be 5-6 by sunset. 9 is fine to close.

Do you have a sump pump?
It did drop a little, so I used my submersible pump to circulate the water and added some chlorine. I think it will be okay. Thanks for responding.👍🏻
