I need some help from some more experienced pool owners.

In the past few weeks I've started having a ton of white flakes coming out of my returns - primarily coming out of the last return on the line which is one over my steps and unfortunately the hardest place to vacuum them off. I've definitely experienced this random times before in the last couple of years but each time The salt cell was dirty and cleaning it solved it for a long time.

Salt cell was clean when we opened the pool in April. I cleaned it again a couple weeks ago shortly after I started having trouble with the flakes. It was surprisingly clean at the time. It only had a couple of little spots of buildup on the edges.

Nothing in my tests seems to be out of range to my knowledge in a way that would cause this. I have even went to the local pool store that I actually trust to have accurate results (and never tries to upsell me on anything more than I come in to buy), trust based on taking water with me anytime I am going in anyway and comparing with what I get with my own kit.

The guy at the store seems to be pretty knowledgeable and I asked him he had any suggestions about the current flake situation. He said he couldn't see anything that really stood out to him that would cause as much as I am seeing. He did mention that sometimes you might want to decrease alkalinity and increase calcium to get a better balance even though the CSI I typically have is pretty close to zero.

I've never really worried about calcium because I have a fiberglass pool and essentially every single person has told me not to worry about that. It is on the low end though around 220, and I'm pretty shocked about that considering our local water source that we use in our pool is notoriously hard.

The only change right before we started to see the flakes was adding salt to the pool. It was understandably low when we opened this season and we increased from just over 2,000 to 2,600, and then recently added enough to get it up to the 3,000 we usually shoot for.

The flakes actually started the day after we did the initial salt addition this year. I know this obviously has something to do with salt cell process because they don't come out when it's off. But there has to be a way to fix this, right?

OK - TA was my firs thought, especially after the store guy mentioned calcium and TA combo, but I wanted feedback. The crazy thing is, I have tried to lower below 100 quite a few times over 3 years, and I can't seem to get below there. I can't imagine what it will take to get to 80 or 60.

Used multiple different types of MA. First realized I was getting some "green" version at lowes that lots of other people complained about barely working. Have since used the Transchem brand (31.45%) from Ace and Sunnyside brand (31%) from Menards. My PH will drop as expected, and I spend some time aerating to get back up, but the TA never budges very much.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a better way?

What is the pH, TA, and CH of your fill water?

Do you have an autofill on your pool?

High TA fill water and evaporation can make keeping a low TA difficult.

Adding Borates in pool - Further Reading can stabilize the pH in the cell and stop the scale formation.

I've never tested the fill water. I assume I could probably do that pretty easily. Lol.

Will post results when I do.

We do not have an autofill. We do have an auto cover which does seem to help a lot with evaporation, so I really only found myself adding water, after backwashing and evap, maybe once a week. Usually add between a half inch to an inch just to get it to the middle of the skimmer after both of those.

In FG pool, without tile/grout tile line, CH doesn't matter.

TA of 140 is not bad. But is likely the cause of flaking.

I have this, built on a sump pump to areate. The key is pH between 7.0 and 7.4 and making LOTS of VERY TINY bubbles. See my link below to lower TA.

Nice. I have a utility pump that I sit on the tanning ledge when I really need to get ph back up. It makes an amazing 8 foot fountain. We also have tanning ledge returns that help.

I guess my main question now is just how much I can safely lower at once without decreasing my pH too much all in one add. I mean, there have been times I've added 2-3 gallons of MA over a few days, running all the aeration at once, and TA barely budges. I think I got down to 90 once but I questioned my testing. lol. Sometimes I'm looking at the color change and it's not red yet/but not green and wondering if I should stop there.

Checking out your link in just a sec. Thanks!

I guess knowing my hose water is 140 makes this struggle make more sense. Not sure why I never tested that before.

@PoolStored - Does that aeration device help cool your water off at all?

We struggled with that last summer after late July and I'm already getting to 92/93 some days. Got some of those return fountain sprayers from Amazon, but they are a PITA, especially since we have the autocover. I might see if I can set something like this up that I can just lift in and out. Thanks!

Hey all! Got my TA down to about 75. Left the swg off for about a week and used chlorine because we were getting ready for a party and I just didn't want the flakes to clean up if they hadn't been corrected. Tuen dnit back in this past weekend and NO FLAKES! YAY! So thanks for helping me figure that out.
However ... I'm getting what looks like Teflon tape coming out of the returns. I'm perplexed. I haven't used any on anything since the gizzmo in the winter. It looks like removed tape that someone rolled up. It's stretchy when you pull it. But I have NO idea where it would be coming from if it were that.
Any ideas??
