Pool Light Leak

Hello everyone!

We have two big issues going on with our pool currently.

First, we have a groundwater issue that has caused our liner to float a couple of times…. but we have contacted a couple of local landscaping companies to install some type of drainage system/sump wells/etc to help us with that and hopefully prevent our liner from floating again. We just can’t get anyone to return our phone call (it’s been two weeks now), but we plan to follow up this week. we can get someone to help us.

Now for the other problem. We still have a leak in our pool light.American Leak Detection came out on 8/5/22 and detected a leak around the ring of the pool light. The conduit was reported to be good and leak free. They recommended we get a new liner.

We had a new liner installed and we still have a leak around the ring of our pool light. We had another leak detection company come out and they put epoxy around the ring which seemed to help greatly but the epoxy is coming off (we think my nieces may have picked at it while we were gone on vacation).

I’d like to have this fixed. Do we have to contact a liner company to have it fixed?

I found this product below online. Would this help our leak or is this more for conduit leaks??

Well, something doesn't sound right. Something is still wrong. One one hand, both the light conduit and seal between the light & liner can't be deemed as leak-free yet still be loosing water at that area. The only other thing (big coincidence) would be is if the leak is actually from somewhere else in the pool at the same water height. Problem now is that the first test by American Leak Detection was some two years ago. They don't guarantee their service for this long, so even if it was the liner back then, which was since replaced, now the conduit (or niche shell) could actually be leaking. Applying sealant around the light retaining ring doesn't solve the problem, and I would have that area investigated further.

We did have a second leak detection pool company (Right Way Leak Detection out of Dallas, TX) come out in December 2023 and they did extensive tests and found the pool light was leaking. They thought they may have a heard a slight leak at the skimmer but when they came back a few days later to test it more thoroughly, they deemed it was good and that the culprit was the pool light. (They had trouble hearing well the first day because roofers were putting g a roof on a house behind us). That leak detection company are the ones who put the epoxy around the outer rim of the pool light and oddly enough, the water has held fairly steady since. I even did a couple of bucket tests and didn’t notice any major change in loss from the bucket compared to our pool. But l, now that the epoxy is wearing/falling off we are seeing major water loss again!!! Our CYA and salt are both LOW!!!

We have a dye kit. Should we go ahead and remove the pool light and look for any leaks/cracks at the conduit or within the plastic niche shell/light casing ?

We can also call ALD back out again if needed, but I am pretty confident the leak is within the pool light somewhere since the epoxy made a HUGE difference in our water loss.

I just wasn’t sure if the product in my last post (plastic around the light niche) would solve our issue if the leak is within the rim/gasket and NOT in the niche/shell/conduit.

No, they didn’t. They just put epoxy around the rim of the pool light which helped tremendously. We plan to do a dye test (remove the light) and see if we can tell where the leak is this weekend. If we can’t figure out where the leak is, we will likely call ALD back out to be safe. Thanks for your help!
