Hack My Pool

okay... make sure I get this right:

10 ml in my chlorine only tube
one scoop r-0870
swirl
If it's pink - we have chlorine

THEN
drop by drop of r-0871
swirl in each drop
when we get CLEAR water - total number of drops - divide by2
and thats how much Free Chlorine I have?

Then, IMMEDIATELY after testing FC, add your 5 drops of reagent #3 and use the 871 again to test for CC. Same process. If you let it sit too long you will get skewed results.

You have a speed stir - it will do the swirling for u!

Here we go - 11 drops. So 5.5… but I notice the longer it sits it moves back to pink… do I keep adding drops?

Added the 003 and 0871 - took 3 drops to clear. So 1.5 on CC.

You do the test, call it at the change to clear & move on. You don’t want to wait between the fc test & the cc test.
If left to sit it will turn back pink.

Looks like yellow & 8.2!
Stick with the fas/dpd for chlorine testing.

Do all the tests & post the results like this
👇
Fc
Cc
Ph
Ta

No, get it clear the first time and that is the number. that is why I say not to let it sit because it will skew the result

Ah shoot - okay let me get a fresh batch of water and test again. This time I will record when it immediately goes clear - not once it returns to pale pink! Then I will also run the full series of tests in the order requested!

Thanks for hanging with me! 🙌

Let me guess. If we get in we will start to glow, and grow additional appendages??
Nah. Maybe a minor rash. And some iron stains. :ROFLMAO:

Your SLAM target (40% of CYA) is 20 FC if tomorrow's sunshine test verifies the 50.

The Ph may be much higher than 8.2. Lower it with muriatic acid, mix for 15 mins and test. Repeat test/dose/mix as necessary until it's a low 7.

For muriatic acid - is there a ppm I need to follow?
Lower it .4 (point 4) at a time per poolmath. You want Ph to be 7.2 to start slam and large doses tend to be less predictable so we go in little steps. It may take several tries. Just mix well and retest and repeat another .4 if needed.

Muriatic acid is "stuff you can buy in the paint section at your hardware store" - do I need the "stuff" that is approved for pools and spas - per the Menards website?

Also - any suggestions on how many of these bad boys to grab while I am at Menards? 2? 3?

Pool math tells me this (attached). If I read this right, to get to a 7.2 I need 51 oz or 31.45% Muriatic Acid. At 0.4 per dose - my horrible math brain tells me that's 20.4 oz at a time.

Am I reading this right?

And again - as always - thanks for hanging with me.

No. Muriatic acid is muriatic acid. Some manufactures don't care to certify their 'concrete etcher' or such for pools, but it's the same stuff.

Ace Hardware has the strong stuff (31%) for $9.99 most places. When my box stores only had the weak stuff for $13, (14% / green / eco / low fumes) I went to the paint store and they had full strength for $27 so it was no bargain. That's when I found ACE instead.

One is plenty for now.

Yup. You got it right. But the large dose might be off so do it in batches to get it right.

Also, I like the app so I don't need a laptop poolside. Or at my kitchen table where I test. The free version works great but the yearly subscription let's you save all your logs which we can see too.

We got you. We never forgot how bad it sucked relying on the store which fleeced us. We show up everyday to help it suck less for others. :)
