July Vacation

We are going on Vacation in July for 9 days.

I don't have anyone who I'd trust to keep the pool balanced.

I'm thinking of doing this:

Add Polyquat
Balance the pool.
Turn off the heat a couple days prior.
When we leave, shut it off and leave the floating cover on.

What do you guys think?

Poly is one option as long as the FC level isn't too high which could eat some of it away. Or you could increase the FC to SLAM level then leave. Perhaps place a tab floater in there as well if your CYA level isn't too high already. You have options. The cover will help. Local temps will dictate how fast the FC will disappear, so use your good judgment.

Yeah, I've heard only good things about running Salt Water in a pool. But for my ancient pool, made from steel with aluminum coping, that's a non-starter unfortunately. I've got enough corrosion to deal with as it is.

Your signature shows Bleach Chlorination. Every drop of bleach adds salt.
Might want to have the salt level tested.

I recommend bringing it up to slam before you cover it. That always worked for me.

+1 to testing your salinity before you say the SWG is a non starter. @kul one post above me had a 'salt pool' and didn't even know it until she converted and tested it the first time.

*maybe it was 80% and not entirely there...... yet. But still. You'll be surprised.

A FC of 6 is barely in the Target FC Range which is 6-8 for a CYA of 50. No way I would leave my pool at that level then leave town. With your CYA, you can safely take your FC up to 20 as the SLAM level which is what I would recommend. At least do FC of 10-15 for peace of mind while you are away.

My checklist for vacation:

Bump up chlorine output slightly

Balance chems

Set water at normal level

Close skimmer completely

Open main drain

Turn off heater

Put in frog log

Lock gates

Do you recommend the K-1766 test kit? FYI, the pool was filled last summer (new liner and skimmer).

I generally avoid visiting the Aquaquip Store for testing; they just wanna sell me a bunch of chemicals I don't want or need.
