Let the dog out tonight and didn't hear the comforting sound of my 2-speed Hayward on high speed, as it is supposed to be at this time of night. Control panel indicated it was on high speed, but it was clearly not on al all.. Cycled it to low (no response) and then off. Put it on high and it made a buzzing sound, coming from the motor. You know, the sound a big electric motor makes when it is trying to turn but cannot. Almost sounded as if it was seized. I opened the filter basked and cleaned it out; wasn't much stuff in there. And, as it's dark and I was in my PJ's, I didn't fish around to see if anything made it past the filter basket (how could that even happen anyway), but I'll look closer in the morning. . I played around and honestly don't remember the exact order of things, but I could get it to go into low...I think after cycling through high (with buzzing sound from motor).
Strangely, if I put it on Service Timed Mode (press red service button twice, and red service light blinks), then press filter button, the pump turns on high speed and sounds perfectly normal. It will also run in low if I press filter again. I tried this a few times and is repeatable. In Service Locked Mode (solid red light), the pump will not work.
I need to confirm all this, as I was just fumbling around in no systematic way. I'll do that in the morning and report back. Man I really hope the pump isn't dying. The fact that it works in Service Timed Mode seems weird though. And to be clear, the buzzing sound was 100% coming form the motor, not the PL-PS-8 box. And...I hate to throw in a potential red herring, but we did have a power flicker at around 7am today. All things equal, I assume that is unrelated...as the pump turned on during the day as it was supposed to (it runs on low from 11am-5pm, and of course it turns on at high speed at first for 3 minutes by program to "prime" I guess).
I have shut the breakers off inside the control panel and will look again tomorrow.
