Pool Guy Tests Chlorine

I have a friend who just bought a house with a pool that has been and is still being maintained by some pool guy. I've been talking to my friend about our method, and he bought a TF-100 kit and plans on taking over his water chemistry himself in the near future. Anyway, he sent me this message last night:
.
> One thing I forgot to mention, [the pool guy] tested the water for
> chlorine today by squeezing a few drops of something directly into the
> pool, and watching to see if it turned red. I didn’t see the number on
> the bottle, but it looked like the bottles in my kit, and I think the

Well, I don't know what to make of that either. Any thoughts on what the pool guy was doing?

Lol that's funny the red top would be the pH reagent I think. Hopefully this reaffirms that he's made the right decision.

But......you can just put the chlorine drops in the pool and if you see them turn yellow there is some chlorine which is probably good enough for a quick and dirty test.

Pool guy was probably doing a half-baked pH test since you mentioned the reagent bottle cap was red. He may have done the same thing to test FC with the yellow cap reagent. Neither is a valid test.

What to make of it? Your friend is paying for sub-par pool service. He should just fire the service and do it himself. He already has one of the recommended test kits. What's holding him back? Does he have a forum account here yet? There's no time like the present to save money and manage the pool himself.

Thanks for your comments, folks. For as long as I've been successfully applying the TFP system, I still don't pretend to know everything there is to know. It made no sense to me at all, but... coulda been some weird-Rear indicator I just had not read about yet or something.

His “testing” is laughable. I’m not surprised, but it is sad nonetheless. Good that your friend is going to be testing properly.

How many drops should I use ? My test sample is 128,704,001 ml.

Add 1.29 kg of DPD powder. Stir to combine. You should see a colour change to pink if chlorine is present.

Add reagent dropwise stirring between each drop. At 5 FC, you should expect the colour to change to clear after about 3.2 billion drops, or about 5100 liters of reagent. Each drop should take about 1 second, in order to keep the size of drops consistent.
