bperry’s pool renovation

You don't want to replace it ? I'm 47 and enjoy it just as much as when I was 12. :ROFLMAO:

Oh, we’ll replace it once the bank account recovers a bit. One issue is that the supports for it are spaced farther out than the board says they should so it’s not as bouncy as a normal board. I suspect the supports were placed for a longer board and either that board broke and they replaced it with a shorter one, or maybe there’s some kind of regulation on board “stick out” the installers goofed up on and switched to a shorter board.

The bolts on the diving board were rusted solid and so another new tool excuse came up. I didn’t even fool around with rust penetrant. I don’t know how I ever got through life so long without an electric hacksaw.

Here’s the shot of the fulcrum location compared to where it should have been. It’s about 12” difference.

And the bolts holding this on have seen better days.

Anyone know the details on these new main drain covers that are supposed to prevent entrapment? Seems like I could replace mine but I’m not sure how they work or if it actually does anything useful. I don’t mind spending the money on a new cover if there’s some actual benefit. I’m curious how they work.

I BELIEVE, the "anti-entrapment" feature is actually the legs of the cover that offset the cover from the floor and have space for water to flow between the legs. If you got your hair in the holes, the legs have openings that allow water to flow, reducing the suction on the holes/hair.

I’m curious how they work.
They spread the suction over many holes, making it unlikely you plug enough of them to get stuck.

Yours has larger slots which could suck more hair into the pipe and grab somebody if it's a single drain with the full suction pipe a few inches away from the cover.

Both the cover reduces some risk and spacing two of them 6ft apart on newer builds all but eliminates any chances of either plugging both ends at once, or getting 3 ft of hair sucked into the Y before the split.

So this type of cover may have some benefit even if I only have a single drain. That’s was I was looking for.

See the difference in the 2 openings ? Imagine a clump of hair hitting them both and which one would be more likely to allow more hair in. I don't think anyone with long enough hair ever had it that close to my drains in over a decade, but for $27, it's simply not worth skimping on.

I'd be replacing it to match the pretty new plaster either way, from an aesthetic angle. With that, my safety would improve a notch.

So the screw holes are more than 6” apart and this cover says the holes are 6” apart. I can see two other holes on my drain that ARE 6” apart but not sure if those are what I’d use. I see a replacement ring referenced here. Anyone know what that is and if so need it? This is a ~22 year old drain.

What is the part number on the current cover?
No part number on the cover. But I pulled it off and there’s two hole patterns on the drain. One for 6” (12 and 6 o’clock) and the other for the larger pattern. It’s probably worth buying one and seeing if it fits. Maybe I can also ask my pool guy to add one to the bill.

The cover just has text that says “use only with Hayward drains…blah blah”
