Liquid Chlorine
I have a new pool and will be following the guidelines on your website. I need to add liquid chlorine, CYA and muriatic acid. I plan on adding enough muriatic acid to bring the PH level down to 7.2. I understand that fixing the TA issue will take time. My question is can I add the chlorine, CYA and muriatic acid in the same day? I was thinking one chemical every 30 minutes. Or do I need to tackle the issues in a specific order over a longer time period. Here are the current test results:

FC……0.3 ppm
CC….. 0
PH…….8.2
TA…….340
CH……180
CYA….0

thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Absolutely. The only two you do not want to put in the pool together is liquid chlorine and muriatic acid. Keep those 15 minutes or so apart, pump running.

Marty is the expert and what he said is 100% correct. That said, I always wait 20-30 minutes, pump running, between chemicals. Just me being anal retentive.

I always wait an hour or so between chemicals with the pump running but I try and be a bit cautious. I would address the PH problem first, chlorine second and CYA third. CYA will take a bit to come up. I accidentally overshot my CYA by 10PPM by being a bit too impatient.

Yesterday I added 32 ounces of 20-baume which was the calculated amount to drop PH 0.6. Today PH is reading 8.1, so it only dropped 0.1. Any ideas why it didn't drop the full 0.6? Can I add more muriatic acid today? Has anyone dealt with very high TA's, mine is 340 and I'm wondering if that's part of my issue. Thanks

Absolutely.

TA is often elevated in your part of the country. Use enough acid per the PoolMath APP to lower the pH from 8.0 to 7.2. Each time you use that much acid, it will take a small bite out of the TA as well. Repeat as necessary.
