DE blows back into pool

I have never had this happen before this season. When I charge the DE filter with the DE through the skimmer, the DE just blows back into the pool through the returns. Took the filter apart, and the fingers are perfectly clean, not sticking to the fingers at all. Thoughts?

I just took the filter apart and it is perfectly clean. Nothing in the bottom of the filter nothing stuck to the fingers… it looks just like it did after I washed it, and put it away in the fall.! When I say, DE blew back into the pool I mean all of it! The only thing we did different was cut out the frogger chlorinator this spring and just ran the line straight through. I can’t believe anything got reversed in that process.

D,

Sounds like a MPV issue to me.. Are you sure it is in the filter position?

I would think that even if you had a large tear in a grid, you'd still see a ton of DE on the other grids.

It sounds like the DE is by-passing the filter all together.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Valve on back of tank? That was replaced with a ball valve last year. Is there another slide valve somewhere?
Typically a DE (or sand) filter) either has a multiport valve or plunger/slide valve. You said it doesn't have a MPV, so I assumed a slide valve. If you have a different set-up please post some pics so we can see how your filter is configured.

Pat,

I am only 77 years old, so not old enough to have seen that filter..

I did look at the manual and it appears to me that the water would never pass through the filter with the gauge in that spot. The gauge has to be in the middle port for anything to work.

I can't see how you could do that just putting something back together.. You'd have to reinvent the plumbing.

Thanks,

Jim R.

D,

That is a very dinky filter for the size of your pool. But if it is working there is no reason to change.

I was just giving you a hard time...

How often do you have to backwash that filter during your season?

Thanks,

Jim R.
