Hello!
I am having a new liner installed this month. My pool runs off of an SWG, however, I assume it will need liquid chlorine to start once we get it filled so as not to overtax the SWG cell/equipment. That aside, I'm planning for how much salt I'm going to need to purchase. I have a pretty large pool (24x44 with 8' deep end) and have estimated it's approx 36,000 gallons (I will take a reading off of my water meter before we start to fill and later when full, so I know my actual gal. upon completion). I've tested my tap water and it measures 200 ppm salinity. So I'm planning to get it up to 3,200 - I need enough salt to raise it to 3,000 ppm. Pool Math tells me that is approx. 925 lbs (23-24 bags). Any issue with this logic? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on the best place to purchase so much salt? Is there a 'bulk store' or am I dealing with individual 40 lb. bags?

Nope. (y) Aim low when you add. Its easy to overshoot and its hard to remove. Creep up the last bit to target.

The cell won't care if you use it to make the FC, its either on or off and doesnt 'work harder', but it will take some days to raise the FC to target. Use liquid chlorine which will mix in 15 mins and be good to go. Then the SWG can maintain it.
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on the best place to purchase so much salt?
Google your Walmart, HomeDepot, Lowes or anywhere else you've gotten it in the past. It appears salt is about $2 a bag more than last year.

You're dealing with bags, but you may get free delivery as a big enough purchase from somewhere. Or. It may be worth the $75 (?) delivery fee from Home Depot (etc) to have it dropped off. Pushing 925 lb flatbed carts is no fun.

S,

As far as I know you are stuck with 40 lbs. bags. I also calculate about 24 bags.

I would add them 6 at a time, sweep them around until dissolved and add 6 more. I'd add 18 of them and run the pump 24/7 for a day and then test and see how much more salt you actually need.

You never want to run the cell when adding a lot of salt.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Understood, thanks for the insight!

My new liner just got put in today. Best price I could find locally was $5.99 for solar salt at rural king. Walmart is up to $7 or $8 a bag for pool salt. You’ll have to take out a loan to get it from a pool store. Check around til you find the best price.
